Well one of the things which attracted me to the fleet in the first place. Was the lack of ads being placed on Neoplans during the 80s early 1990s. the Scheme looked so complete with the "zizzag" Panels on the back, and the Horizontal "ribbed" pattern on their engine door (AK-BM)! What exactly happened for SEPTA not to buy into the whole concept of not placing ads on their buses? I've remembered the very first time I saw ad was Hot Shots back in 1991. During the times when ads pop on the buses, the Neoplans underwent a slit modification of the back panel to a more flatter design for rear ads. |

Before '80 or so SEPTA vehicles had card racks on them for ads. During the early 70's some ads became the 'stick-on' variety (WMMR radio was one I recall). The AMG tracklesses may have been the last vehicles to be delivered with exterior ad racks. Racks could be a problem especially when the cards got loose and they played havoc with vehicle washers as well. Starting with the RTS's the policy at SEPTA changed to make the vehicles more nice looking and ads went away. They drifted back in the later part of the 80's (I want to say '88 or '89 but don't recall exactly) and, when they came back, they were the stick-on type. Apparently SEPTA took a lot of heat over the money it could be making by bringing back ads on vehicles. Because of the ribbed panels on the backs of the Neoplans, good ad space was lost, so many of the buses got new smooth panels. The RTS's, which had smooth panels, had a small circular protrusion at the lower left of the panels, and ads tended to get pasted right over them. Personally I didn't mind the cards/racks but I don't care for the stick-ons/wraps. |

I believe the "no ad ban" was rumored to be a David Gunn decree. |

You would be right about that. One of the problems Gunn noticed with the ads was the corrosion issue. |
