From another website:

(I) was at the meeting this morning. Perhaps the most interesting thing
that came out of the meeting was not what was said but the letter
submitted by Deputy Mayor Cutler.

The letter lays out capital priorities for CTD as the City sees them
and is the result of a meeting held between the City and Septa a month
ago.

The letter lists nine immediate capital priorities and ten longer term
projects. The first four projects are already in the design or
procurement phase so I won't even mention them.

The City says the last five immediate priorities are new but urges
Septa to accommodate them under the Infrastructure Safety & Renewal,
State of Good Repair, or Smart Stations projects. These are:
5. 34th St. - New headhouses
6. Spring Garden St (MF) rehab
7. 19th St. rehab
8. 30th St. - new headhouses and improved connections with Amtrak station
9. Fairmount - rehab

The City says the first five of the longer term projects should be
advanced into the engineering phase, "if possible by means of current
funding streams." These are:
1. Delaware Waterfront Transit Extension
2. Additional cars for Route 15 (perhaps in conjunction w/Waterfront
Transit)
3. Broad-Ridge Spur - conversion of surplus MF cars for use there
4. Route 23 - "Phased Light Rail Service Restoration"
5. Routes 29 and 79 - "Trackless Trolley Service Restoration"

Projects 6-8 have some planning and/or land use issues to be resolved:
6. Eastwick Transportation Center
7. "Navy Yard Rail Transit Extension (Broad Street Line, Waterfront
Light Rail, etc.)"
8. Callowhill Depot replacement

The last two projects are high cost and it is recognized that funding
will be an issue. These are:
9. "Roosevelt Boulevard Rail Transit Extension (Broad Street Line)"
10. "New Market West Subway Station (Market-Frankford Line)"

It looks like the City gets it.

It is still possible to to submit comments on these or any other ideas
until January 30. Comments should be sent to capbudget@septa.org

New headhouses for 30th Street???

Ummm....did the City notice that little project was completed a few years ago in conjunction with the ADA project?

As for improved connections with the Amtrak station, just how would they do that? The old underground passageway can no longer be used, since the bar in the west concourse at 30th Street sits atop the area where those stairways came out....

I hope they get to Spring Garden on the MFL. That (would) be the last station to be improved.

19th st station on the SSL line is the worse station I've been in.

Fairmount Local and Ridge needs to get some serious treatment.

More cars on the 15? Definitely. Let's fix the errors that the Kawasaki's have on the 15 line and have them them run on it.

Light rail service on the 23 would be good but from what my mom tells me from riding it long ago, I don't know about it.

Broad-Ridge Spur - conversion of surplus MF cars for use there? LMFAO Bring it on.

Routes 29 and 79 - "Trackless Trolley Service Restoration"? Looks good.

"Navy Yard Rail Transit Extension (Broad Street Line, Waterfront
Light Rail, etc.)" -- I doubt it.

Callowhill Depot replacement- I love the architecture of it.

Roosevelt Boulevard Rail Transit Extension (Broad Street Line)" -- Bring It On

"New Market West Subway Station (Market-Frankford Line)" -- Do we have to think about this now?

This will be interesting to see how these "surplus" cars are transformed, if they even are.

Really, what's the benefit of having the 29 and 79 converted back to trackless trolley status? The 29 serves Pier 70 now, which is a connection that certainly benefited that route. It's just going to be a hassle.

Now remember, these are just ideas that the city submitted to SEPTA for consideration for the capital budget. We'll see what gets done, if any (hopefully at least some of them will!).

Former trolley operators tell me the line was a disaster with trolleys. Of course, trolley advocates think it would be charming to have trolleys back on Germantown Ave.

Take your pick.

Not sure what the new headhouses are (since this is obviously done), but the underground connection can be reopened. There was an idea to build a stairway/elevator just outside the doors at the southwest corner of the station building and the underground connection could start/end there instead of coming up directly in the station. This might be the new headhouse the City is requesting.

As for 29/79 it's obvious that the infrastructure is there, for the most part, and TT's should return. The issue of 29's extension to Pier 70 could be resolved as previously posted (a 29/79 east end connection) or having the coaches run on diesel from Front/Tasker where wire presently ends.
