Then why, in heaven's name, would you shove the only vehicles that keep this bus system diverse down people's throats? SEPTA's bus fleet is morbidly plain, yes indeed. I can't say that "way back when I was a kid" it was "diverse", but man, at least the things that dominated the fleet were somewhat interesting. Now we have 400 of the most boring buses in the universe joining the fleet, ousting the very first "new technology of the 21st Century" buses that SEPTA received - the ever-so-hated NABI 416. SEPTA's interesting bus fleet went away with the Neoplan AN440 in my opinion. I feel bad for those that never got to experience the SEPTA of my childhood, in addition to the SEPTA before I was even born! |

Easy, When 1 new artic comes in SEPTA retires 1 Neo artic. By the time the first 100 new artics are already delivered the 71xx series they will be retired. 1 for 1 just like when one of the AN440's were retired and 1 TT was delivered. Plus my only reason as to why SEPTA started the Neo artic series with 7101 is because of that one bus numbered in the 7000 series. |

A little history lesson, When the 71xx came into the service, most of the 70xx Volvo were still active. They remained active because of the RNC in the summer months of the year 2000. After this event, these units were scrapped. Also, more likely the next fleet coming in will likely is in the 73xx series since already the 7xxx is already granted to the artic bus order. The fleet numbers on the museum fleet are nonrevenue fleet numbers. Meaning they are not currently in active service, and therefore SEPTA could reuse the 7000-7100 series again for buses even if 7011 was still here. No telling if SEPTA will even order Artics again though, nor how many and what they will replace. Some of them could be additional to the fleet, but it all depends on the Act 44 funding issue as well as the economy. You can't order these new buses and have no one riding on them. The Latest news is Request for Proposals will go out sometime in 2010-2011. With this in mind, the Neoplan Artic fleet already underwent a 5-year overhaul, so in theory they should last at least until 2014-2015. Now the Eldorados however, There 10-year useful life period will be up in 2011, expect RFPs to fly out sometime later this year. Right now mainly on the Agenda for this year is the order of 100 hybrids with the possible choice of 20 more. BTW, has 8220-8239 been built yet? Or did SEPTA opt out from the choice of the extra 20 hybrids in the 2008 batch? |

I will bet you any new artics will start at 7301. The possibility is out there that there could be more or less artics in the new order, and if there will be more, then they obviously can't re-use the 70xx series for numbers... |

I did not not see the artic in the yard. I guess NIMCO offered big bucks for this bus. |

I was hoping that 7011 could have been preserved. |

The next hybrid order will be for 120 buses, starting in July. The other options with New Flyer are still opened. |
