SEPTA is hiring a lot of new operators. Service is not increasing that much.

I'm wondering if they are going to ask a lot of the current senior operators to retire early, for an early out? There are some economics involved with that. You can retire your higher paid employees and replace them with new , lower paid ones. The problem is is lose all that experience.

They may be doing that, although isn't there that pension that may make it expensive? Also, I'm wondering if they are trying to cut down on the amount of overtime they are giving drivers as well, and perhaps they are hiring more part-time drivers than anything else.

I am sure they are cutting overtime. Its actually cheaper to have more operators then it is to pay overtime regularly to current operators. Overtime is time and a half. The amount operators make per hour plus half of that for any hours over 40 they work. So its cheaper to hire new people to drive for the system so they dont have to pay for overtime regularly. If I was living in Philadelphia I would apply to be a SEPTA operator. But right now before I work for ANY TA Im going to wait until this recession is over. Because the more seniority you have the less likely you are to be laid off.

I have heard the same thing. The regular operators are getting cut out of OT.
