I heard this story from an old trackless operator. For the peak periods: The 66 needed (38) coaches The 59 needed (17) coaches The 75 needed (14)coaches Now we do all three lines with (38) coaches. It shows you how much more people used transit in the old days. Chuck |

Around 1980, when the AMGs started arriving on SEPTA property, the allotment for Frankford was something between 65 to 70 coaches, with the balance going(or went) to Southern. 64 for Frankford 46 for Southern? Out of all the trackless routes, the 75 has lost a substantial rideship base, mainly due to the issues with the homes in the Logan area at that time, causing either eminent domain or an exodus of residents who at one time, rode the coach to Broad Street or Germantown Avenue, or perhaps, Margaret/ Orthodox. As of late, 38 coaches for the Frankford network, a network @ Southern "defunct", & they can't even get the coaches up for revenue service. |

through out the 80's the allotment for the amg's were: southern: 800-844 frankford: 845-909 from what i can remember, from 1982 to 1986, both the 29 and 79 was running every 5 to 8 minutes during morning peak peroids. (schedules used to say "every 10 minutes or less between 7:15 am and 5:00 pm). at least 4 to 6 additional "chartered" or "not in service" coaches were used eastbound in the afternoons on each line just for st john neumann high school when 7th and 8th peroid were let out for the day. in addition septa was also prepared on the 2 lines when neumann had scheduled early dismissals. at least 2 of these these coaches were also used for bok vocational tech school westbound. the majority of vehicles used for bok were mainly 35ft and 40ft fishbowls and flxibles that left from 8th and mifflin and proceded southbound on 8th, then westbound on snyder ave (at least 8 of these vehicles would pass me on 8th and snyder while i was waiting for the 47 after getting off the 79) population shifts in south philly, the rising cost of catholic high school tuition and merger of of neumann and goretti caused a decrease in ridership over the years. up to the mid-late 70's each school's population was over 2000 students. when i attended neumann from 1982-1986 sudent population was just over 1500 students. does anyone know the exact number of coaches used on peak peroids for the 29 and 79 bcak then and now ?
