We all know Septa cut off Trackless trolley service in 2002 for Route 59, 66, and 75. And in 2003 for routes 29, and 79. Last Year Septa restored service to trackless trolley routes 59, 66, and 75. In October of 2006 Septa declined to have TT return to South Philly. The Main Question is: What route is most likely to return to trackless trolley service, if it would ever happen. Rt. 29 or 79? Me personally I believe Rt. 79 is because there wouldn't be much work to do. Except the part of ordering TT. But Wires are intact all along Snyder Ave. except these locations: Also of course Southern Depot has to restore its wires along 19th and 20th street, and within the depot to support TT. 22nd and Snyder/21st and Snyder (One of the turns are missing a wire) Between 2nd and 3rd and Snyder a wire is cut off EB of Rt. 79. All wires are then cut off after Snyder and Water. So I think 79 can be a really good candidate for TT service if it would ever return. |

I Doubt SEPTA will ever return service for those routes....i still in a way question why they declined to in the first place....but you know how those votes go by the SEPTA Board...and plus Souther Depot is filled with all those buses now, i dnt think they would even have any space to store the trackless trolley's. |

Yes, there is a possibility. Odds are, unfortunately, that it will not happen until the next order of TTs come through. |

Here are the facts! SEPTA is officially against restoring trackless trolley service to routes 29 and 79. The City of Philadelphia along with community orginizations in South Philly want service restored. And as far as i know the infrastructure for both lines is intact. SEPTA will keep fighting it until people give up or get distracted by something else until the issue dies. So basically they won't return. |

There are several groups fighting to bring back the 29 & 79 as trackless. I heard a comment from a former SEPTA operator that TT's would be perfect down there. SEPTA has a 100 reasons why they won't ever bring then back. So I doubt I'll ever see it in my lifetime. When they killed the option for the extra (23 )units, that said a lot for no trackless in South Philly. |

What happened to "go Green?" the "H" hybrids still let off diesel fuel. ETBs should be ALL electric while in service. SEPTA has no bizzness starting WWIII with Trackless Wars. |

There are issues with having trackless trolleys run again in S. Philadelphia. Weren't people pulling down the poles and stuff like that, which was why the AMGs were in limited service near the end of their lives? Besides, the 29 does well with its Pier 70 service. Do the people want to lose that just for the sake of having electric buses? By people, I say the people that actually use the bus regularly. |

The 29 will be hard to put back on because the p70 exstension will have to have wires put up but as we hear at southern the walmart dont want wires in the parking lot that why the 79 is a heavy favorite to be put back on with trackless trolley and plus southern does have space to put the trackless the former bay for them has 3 rows and we only use 2 one row is used as a passing lane to get buses from the johnston side to the back lot only two row though in that bay has wires and the passing lane is one of them the other two we store mainly hybrids and i think there is one row in house keeping with wires that gives us 3 rows i have to look tommorow in that row to be sure i will post tommorow with a definite answer

Thanks, septafan, I heard the same thing about the wire and space problems in the depot(Southern district). We will await further information. Edited by TransitChuckG, Aug 6 2009, 02:20 PM.

i agree with all the above statements, including the "pier 70 issues" . the 29's ridership increased going to pier 70. i would love to see trackless on the 79 and 29 again. my opinions on this topic was previously stated in Does Southern Depot have potential? and in a few other older posts elsewhere on this board and thanks, septafan, for clarifying the current details in and around southern depot |
