Is that pic of the T underground part of the existing system downtown or something new? I did see during my visit to Pittsburgh a T station being built by Heinz Field so I suspected they were expanding it to Heinz Field which it is good to have the T run to the stadiums which will increase ridership as many prefer taking Mass Transit to sporting events. Like myself.

That is a drawing of the Gateway Center station once it reopens in 2012. The loop it previously had gone as the tracks now continue in the tunnel to the North Shore. Gateway Center closed in Oct 2009 for the construction.

22 buses equipped to suit disabled veterans

Quote:

The authority also has 24 of its 15-year-old red, black and white buses in service while it awaits the arrival of new vehicles.

The older buses will be retired by the end of the year. Fifty-three new buses are scheduled to be delivered in September or October, and 35 of the longer, articulated buses are due in December.

The older buses are used only when necessary, Mr. Ritchie said. Because their days are numbered, they have not been equipped with bike racks. By next week, they will be the only buses in service that don't have them, he said.

Wow if only 24 Nova's are left. More Gillig's and New Flyer's on the way!

According to members of Transit2Talk, New Flyer #3208 is now in PAT's hands. And here is an informative post on what is new about the 5800 series Gillig's.

Port Authority to change 30 bus and trolley routes

Posted Image

Quote:

Port Authority is making adjustments to several routes next month in an effort to ease overcrowding that has beset riders since a 15 percent service reduction took effect in March.

The authority also plans to increase the number of longer, articulated buses in its fleet. Twenty-six new articulated buses are scheduled to arrive by October and 35 more by September 2012, spokesman Jim Ritchie said. With retirement of 25 older long buses, and one bus lost to fire, the fleet will grow from the current 50 to 85.

The 60-foot-long buses have about 16 more seats than conventional 40-foot buses and much more standing room. "We can put more seats on routes where we've seen a bit of crowding," Mr. Ritchie said.

The changes affecting about 30 routes will take effect Sept. 4 and most are minor timetable adjustments. But some routes will see bigger changes.

New bus fare system to get workout as Pitt students return to Oakland

Quote:

Port Authority of Allegheny County's new $33 million electronic fare collection system will get its biggest test this week when thousands of University of Pittsburgh students return to campus.

"This is the first major rollout of the ConnectCard system," Port Authority spokesman Jim Ritchie said.

The agency finished installing new fare boxes on its 700 buses and 83 light-rail cars this summer. Riders use them to pay fares with cash. Next spring, they also will be able to pay fares by swiping prepaid cards over electronic readers on the boxes.

The agency will start offering the smartcards to its riders in March.

But more than 40,000 Pitt students and employees...

Some random thoughts:

1. Nova's are getting harder to come by. Through Oakland I am lucky to see 2-3 per day as I used to see so many more just months ago.

2. Best place to find the New Flyer's is on the P1, though they do get out on 61 series routes with the DD50 Neo artics.

3. More new 5800 series Gillig's are in, though I still have yet to see one.

4. Witnessed a DD60 Neo break down today and fail to restart, their air starters are loud.

5. According to PAT:

The extension of Port Authority's light rail system, "The T," from Downtown Pittsburgh into the city's thriving North Shore area is about 94 percent complete (as of July 2011). The first T trips into the North Shore are scheduled to occur in Spring 2012.

From Facebook, 5801-5824 are ISL/Voith, and 5825-5830 are Cummins/Voith hybrids! 5800 diesel's are different from the other Gillig's, they have more vents on the back, idle and take off is much quieter.
