Hearing set today on proposed transit cuts, fare hikes

Quote:

Financial problems are nothing new for the Port Authority; nor are public hearings on proposed fare increases and service reductions, like the one scheduled today at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

More than 300 people have registered to comment. The authority has proposed 25- to 50-cent fare increases scheduled to take effect July 1 and a 35 percent service cut, deepest in its 48-year history, on Sept. 2. The hearing will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Because so many people signed up, the authority will use two rooms simultaneously to take testimony. Speakers will be limited to three minutes.

Testimony at previous hearings has caused authority officials to make minor changes to service reduction plans, but the authority's position has become so dire that it has little room to maneuver, CEO Steve Bland said.

"The truth is ..."

The T extension 1.2 miles from downtown to the North Shore opens Sunday. 3 years of free rides, this means that the downtown free fare zone for the T now extends from First Ave Station to Allegheny Station.

Congrats on opening the newest rail extension in Pennsylvania! :) Hopefully this will continue to open up more opportunities for PAT and its riders...provided that it gets the funding it needs. I can't wait to see it next time I make my way over there!

So what's next? Why can't Harrisburg get together and resolve it?

If I were to start a private transit bus company, I'd pick up the most popular routes that has high ridership to be profitable and make it accessible to passengers getting to their destinations. If they don't do it, fine we'll handle it instead; they might miss out the potential they might benefit from

Port Authority continues rollout of smart card

Quote:

The Port Authority will continue a slow, steady transition from paper transit passes and tickets to high-tech smart cards this year.

The project was delayed in its early stages by glitches with new fareboxes, and was slowed more recently by a cautious methodology with several pilot tests involving smaller groups of riders. Once targeted for full implementation by the end of 2010, the rollout is now expected to continue into next year.

"We were overly optimistic, but it's going well," authority CEO Steve Bland said after a briefing last week. "It's better to get it right than to throw it out there and get it wrong."

The reusable plastic cards, officially called ConnectCards, have an embedded chip that communicates with the new fareboxes. Riders will be able to add value to the cards at about 60 vending machines that will be installed around the transit system this year; at about 50 Giant Eagle supermarkets that will get automated sales equipment; and online using a credit or debit card.
