Time for PAT to do what Niagara-Frontier did in Buffalo in the 90's - run the system until they run out of money then shut it all down. The longer it stays shut down the more pressure will be put on Harrisburg to come up with a solution. Eventually even drivers who don't use the system will complain when traffic conditions become unbearable due to the lack of transit service. A major city like Pittsburgh with little or no transit service running at all will make the politicians look bad if they don't do anything. I feel SEPTA should do the same if this kind of situation arises here.

Port Authority cuts 13 little-used T stops

T riders are not on board with upcoming cutbacks

Quote:

Port Authority will eliminate 13 little-used stops on the Light Rail Transit system later this month to speed travel times.

In announcing the changes Monday, the authority said the stops were selected for elimination based on low boarding counts and closeness to adjacent stops. It said the longest distance anyone will have to travel to reach an open stop will be about 650 yards, a 5- to 10-minute walk for most people.

The stop eliminations were called for by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, who has ordered the authority to make other changes to improve service and efficiency on the system.

The system has been criticized since its opening in 1985 for slow travel times caused in part by stops that are close together, particularly in Beechview. That neighborhood has vigorously resisted prior suggestions that stops be eliminated.

I guess these are the growing pains of converting a trolley system into a true light rail operation. LRT simply doesn't make such frequent stops - that's for streetcars, and the low level boarding/alighting on those cars is terrible with the one narrow door up front.

Over the weekend, I saw mostly Gilligs on the road, though I did see a pair of Neos working the 53. One question: do they normally run artics on the 88 bus? I spotted 3240 (New Flyer D60LFR) on Penn Ave working the 88 on Sunday around 11am. The only other places I've seen artics (so far) are on the P1 or the 61/71 routes.

The 88 does get artics. It seems to now be a regular thing. And the artics do get spread around, during rush hour you can catch them on plenty of the P routes that use the East busway (P1/P2/P3/P78 ect), some 8X routes, the 61/71's, and the G2. Also the 74 and 28X get them spread throughout the day.

I spotted an artic on the 82 a couple Saturdays ago. I guess they're throwing the Flyers on seemingly random routes.

Are all the artics still running regularly over the summer? I remember last year (whoa wait a minute, it was the summer before last - time flies!) I had a hard time catching an artic on the 61s and other routes that seem to generally be dominated by them (particularly the 3000s).

They should be. For sure on the P1/P2, and I expect them on the Oakland routes, the 28X, and the East Busway Flyer's. I see some photos of artics in the PGH Transit Forums photo section.
