Are all the artics still running regularly over the summer? I remember last year (whoa wait a minute, it was the summer before last - time flies!) I had a hard time catching an artic on the 61s and other routes that seem to generally be dominated by them (particularly the 3000s).
You're all but assured of seeing them on the P1 on weekends. I also see them regularly on other East Liberty routes (I've spotted them in the 82 and 88) and apparently, they show up on the 61C (which serves Kennywood).

Port Authority, Union, State Close To Deal

Quote:

Public transit as we know it will continue with no major cuts if the deal being worked on right now gets finalized and signed off on in the next week or so.

“Obviously there’s details to be worked out with the complexities of these type of negotiations and the fact that we don’t just want it to be one year or two years we’d like this to be for 10 years,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said.

Here is the deal as it stands right now. As the county executive mentioned, it would extend for 10 years.

Hmm...better than nothing, but I can't help but feel that the only annual guarantee is with the union and PAT Management.

A band-aid, if you will.

The "T" has a new sound (watch the video)

Quote:

At first, regular Port Authority rail rider David Mancuso thought he was hearing things.

"I'm usually not awake in the morning," said Mr. Mancuso, who boards the T at Mt. Lebanon for his commute to Downtown.

Then he thought the siren-like sound coming from the light-rail vehicle was a malfunction. Then, after hearing it come from other vehicles, it occurred to him that perhaps it was a safety measure, a sort of nonstop horn to warn vehicles and pedestrians that a train was approaching.

PG VIDEO

Turns out it's a byproduct of good-old-fashioned preventive maintenance.

I was in Pittsburgh over the past weekend (8/16-8/18) & stayed near Robinson Towne Center. Rode the 28X three times (along with one ride on the 24.) Got 56xx Gilligs on one of the 28X rides on Friday & the 24 on Sunday. Also landed a ride on both types of Neoplan artics for the other two rides on the 28X: suburban 3070 on Friday outbound, & transit 3102 on Sunday outbound. 3070 seemed tired & struggled to maintain 45 on the Parkway West, while 3102 easily cruised along at 55-60 on the same road.

Also got a ride on the 40 Mt. Washington with 1522, one of the 35-foot Gillig Phantoms. The 40 is a good test of any bus operator's skill, between the steep grades, tight turns, & sharp curves that litter the route.

Port Authority really needs to do a better job updating the route listings on the bus stop signs, especially outside of downtown. Many of the route listed on the signs in Robinson Twp. haven't operated in years, & nearly all the signs I saw along the 40 still call the route its old number, 41E.

Also, the sooner that the system can get the ConnectCard smart farecard system fully up and running, the better. With the base fare now 2.50, a two-zone ride 3.75, and transfers 1.00, boarding dwell times on inbound buses can be maddeningly long.

Hearings scheduled on Downtown-East End rapid bus plan

Quote:

Groups pushing for development of faster bus service linking Downtown, Oakland and the East End will hold four meetings starting this week to gather public input.

More than 30 diverse organizations support creation of a bus rapid transit system, which has been described as comparable to a light-rail line but with much lower development costs. The Port Authority currently is studying options for such a system.

The upcoming meetings will include discussion of possible route alignments, stations and street configurations and a film clip will show how the system would operate.

In bus rapid transit, extra-long buses operate between above-ground stations that are farther apart than typical bus stops. The vehicles usually run on dedicated bus lanes, with priority at traffic signals. Patrons pay fares in the stations, and screens display real-time information about the next arrivals.

A rapid bus line developed in Cleveland has been credited with sparking $4 billion in development along its path. The Pittsburgh project has received endorsements from Pittsburgh and Allegheny County government officials, Oakland universities and hospitals, and organizations including Sustainable Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

This has been in the works since I first got to Pittsburgh in 2009!

Very interesting article. Actually, the sound the T cars are making sounds exactly like the noise coming from the MFL. I wonder if SEPTA did something similar to this line, especially with the new rails that were installed on the Market Street El.

It really is an obnoxious sound, especially in a tunnel or metal elevated structure.
