Now I know this is hard to comprehend but from the GM Joe Casey to me I was able to get his ear today our conversation was about septa getting buses that appeal to the eye and would make people want to ride them I said every thing looks the same and new buses are coming in. His response was he agreed and after every body gets there alotment of this order meaning frankford thats it for this look he asked me if I was familiar with the Excelsior bus that flyer makes I said yes he said thats what the rest of the order will be I was shocked but that works for septa because they like A/C mounted on the roof and passengers want nicer looking buses. Mr.Casey was at the bus rodeo and was more than willing to give his time to explain this. So be on the look out this should be interesting and meybe septa is finaly getting it.

Cool. Wonder if Septa would also buy the 60ft version to replace the Neoplans?

Well that sounds nice and all, but from a operational standpoint. They don't really need to have newly design buses...They would hove to retrain the drivers on these units as I am sure there are different blind spots on them. This all costs money!

Plus They would also have to amended the contract as well with a new cost and amended funding for the FTA grant as well. The new design I'd imagine costs way more then the original design. I'm sorry, but I'm thinking Casay is not talking about this impending order of 400/480 hybrids, yet hes talking about provisions for future orders of buses!

Also operationally speaking, they could seriously use higher capacity buses like the MCIs or some other over the road vehicles on the routes 104, 124 and 125. These 45 foot buses could seat up to 57 people, which is only 7 short from the amount on the artics. Also they could hold up to 18 standees as well, IIRC. The rear door on the 124/5 does not get use as often as on the city routes!

I was mostly expecting SEPTA to get DE40LFRs before going to the Xcelsior. Since the LFR was the first restyled design after the LF. And the Xcelsior was second. So my thought would always be SEPTA would get DE40LFRs after the LF was discontinued.

I'm glad Joe Casey noticed how bland and outdated looking his fleet was becoming, especially when compared to our neighboring metropolitan areas (Washington, DC and New York). I hope he does understand just how different an Excelsior is compared to the regular 40LF that SEPTA loves.

I'm thinking if anything, they may go with the LFR series since it would be a big change in contract, but if they go all the way...awesome!

The Excelsior likely has less blind spots than the 40LF/Rs that SEPTA currently operates. It should be more resistant to corrosion and be a lighter model as well. It may be a worthy investment. Unlike the LFA, the new design actually has operational benefits.

In regards to the MCIs, I would love to see the riders' smiling faces as they realize they have to squeeze a busload of people up the narrow aisle and out the little front door. Two doors sure is important on those routes.
