Not enough patronage. That lead to the demise of the "Germantown/Luzerne" 4 in June 1996.

I haven't been out in Fort Washington for quite some time. I wonder as to how much activity takes place in the office parks out there. I know that the office parks in Malvern(Route 206) and Chesterbrook(Route 124), as well as "First Avenue(Route 99) have seen better days.

Years ago, back in the early 1970s, SEPTA had a route 4 that radiated from Southern. The "Southern" 4 started from Broad and Oregon and went around the block(like the current route 68) and I think the route went to the Food Center or the Naval Base.

The 4 died when SEPTA created the 201 from Ft. Washington Station to the Office Park. The bus wasn't missed because it had only 1 trip out in the AM rush, and 1 trip in the PM rush, basically if you blink, you missed this bus.

Before 1973, there was a 4 bus that ran from Broad and Snyder to the Food Center, this bus and the old 19 bus [Broad-Snyder to Delaware-Oregon] were folded into extended versions of the G and 7 buses when the BSS was extended to Pattison Avenue.

The 4 was around when SEPTA created the 201. SEPTA created the 201 sometime in the mid to late 1980s. It appears that out of the 200 series routes SEPTA has had over the years, the 201 iwas and still is the most profitable.

4 was an interesting route. It had several destinations depending on the time of day. The basic route was, as noted, Broad & Snyder to the Food Center, operating in the big one-way loop around the Center (7th, Packer, Front, Pattison, 7th). I don't believe there was a layover at the Center - when G took over this routing in '73 that was the big change as I recall and it made riding the route difficult as some riders had to sit through a layover.

4 also went to the Navy Yard via two different routings (one via 11th St and the east gate of the Yard, the other through the main gate) and had certain trips that went to the Food Fair warehouse where the Linc is today. I remember the destination sign for these trips was simply 'Food Fair' - if you remember these times, you recall there were Food Fair stores everywhere (it was a supermarket) and that sign always made me chuckle because it was a free ad and someone could easily get confused not knowing which Food Fair the bus was headed to.

19 came out of the abandonment of 80. When the trackless was converted to bus it didn't last that long and 7 was extended to cover it. 7 ran to 2nd & Oregon in the base period (sharing the 5's layover spot on 3rd St at Oregon) and Delaware Ave in the peaks. 19 became a new route to tie the east-of-Broad segment of Oregon to the subway. 19 seemed to get the oldest equipment at Southern and I don't ever recall seeing a new-look bus on the route in my infrequent sightings of it - it was almost always a 700-series old look at best. It wasn't that busy a route - Oregon Ave didn't have the many stores, etc then that it has now.

When the subway was extended the 19 became extraneous, 7 was extended full-time to Delaware Ave, and G got two extensions to Delaware Ave and the Food Center.

I've taken the 201 a few times and it remains a well-used route. I've also noticed that there is a busy transfer point between 98 and 201 on Pennsylvania Ave near the train station.

A few times in my experience I recall two trips of 201 leaving the train station in the AM within 10 minutes of each other to handle the load - don't know if that's still the case.
