Why did some of them have this (btw I loved the Neo's with it ).And does anyone have any audio/video of #3414 with the DD50? I wish I had been recording transit when I rode it many years ago. Edited by Jayayess1190, Jan 27 2010, 08:36 PM.

IIRC correctly, all of the Neoplans had the Ribbed panel above the engine door. Up until the early 1990s when exterior ads appeared on buses again, many of these panels were removed and replaced with flat ones in order to place the Rear ads on the back of the buses.![]() There is also a ribbed-design engine door cover as well. I don't remember seeing a 1986-1989 Neoplan having them. However, the older Neoplans had these ribbed covers, IIRCC. |

Van2006ko, you are correct. all of septa's an440's and an435's were originally delivered with the ribbed upper panel. the ribbed lower panel was only applied to the 1982-1985 neo's (8285-8584, 8601-8875, 1301-1325) |

Yeah, I meant the lower panel over the engine.

It's amazing. I barely remember those ribbed engine hoods from when I was much younger. As it was before I started noticing bus fleet numbers, I always attributed it to the buses that had the grey trim, which I guess were the older 8000s. All of the covers were replaced with the flat ones, no? Finally, I would love to see if anyone had a recording of 3414. Back when I rode it, I was rocking my old Vivitar camera which didn't record sound at all. It was way before I got my current Olympus, and the MP3 players that record, and definitely before my current zoom. 3414 was an interesting ride, that one time I rode it (same day I rode the Orion VII hybrid, actually). It sounded like a Neo artic, only with NABI gearing (no turbolag). Outside of that, it sounded exactly like a regular Neo, brake squeal and all. It's hard to believe that we are talking about the Neos in the past tense.

The 3414 which you've ridden on is nothing like the 3414 I've ridden on. I've ridden on 3414 twice, once in 2004, and another time in 2005, both times the engine performed differently. The first time, there was a transmission-torque converter issue, only went 8mph up the hill by Overbrook Station on Draxel Road-City ave. The second time, it was slower, yet there were no transmission issues! |

It does help that I rode 3414 on the ever so flat terrain of route 29, lol. |

What's a turbolag on the Detroit Diesel Series 50? |

Turbo lag is pretty self explanatory. The turbocharger on the engine produces roughly 40% of the engine power on the DD50. When the turbo is not spinning, the engine will not have too much power on tap. Turbolag usually occurs in the first gear of the bus. |
