Does any one know the makeshift behind 614's odd roof configuration?

This car was retrofitted with an air conditioning unit. 614 was the only car in the Budd fleet that got this unit put on it's roof. And, back in 1981, air conditioning on ANY SEPTA vehicle was a luxury found only on the RTS buses, the AMG trackless units, SOME, not all of the Fishbowls & Flxibles & the Silverliners, as well as the Pioneer III cars. Oh yeah, the Kawasakis.

How well did the system work, did it last many years? I thought I heard it did not do well.

It didn't. I remember hearing that it was disabled in its later years.

The only Fishbowls and Flxibles that had working Air-Conditioners were the ones assigned to the Suburban Division [RAD and Frontier]. Back in the day, AC was a LUXURY in the City Transit Division. The usual procedure was that if the AC broke, it was not repaired until the bus got overhauled. If it broke after that, then forget it.
