License Plates on 500-799

Here's something for the old timers. I recall that 500-799 had license plates that had their fleet numbers as the last three digits (eg 750 had a plate that was xxx 750 - there were six numbers separated by the keystone symbol in the center). In those days there was one set of plates for every vehicle (not like today where there are commercial vehicle, mass transit, etc plates). I don't know if this was intentional or not. Anyone know anything about this?
