Anyone have a list of all the letter to number conversions?
Let's see, City Division Letters to Numbers:

A Local/A Express = 9, 27, 32 [Roxborough portion to 9, 27/North Philly-East Falls portion to 32]

B = 14

C = not changed [yet]

D = 21

E = 65

F = abandoned

G = not changed [yet]

H/XH = not changed [yet]

I = unknown, probably not used

J = not changed [yet]

K = not changed [yet]

L = not changed [yet]

M = 68

N = 24

O = long gone [merged into Y (70) in 1956]

P = 89

Q = abandoned in late 60's [ most of route now the southern part of the 25]

R = not changed [yet]

S = 18

T = most of route incorporated into 84. Rhawn St branch now part of 28, Welsh Rd branch was originally the 86 before T absorbed this route, then it was split off as the 41 then reabsorbed into the present 88.

U = merged into the 108

V = became the 49 in the 60's, then merged into the 64.

W = split into the 19 and 67

X = 77 [extended to Jenkintown and Cottman Ave in NE Philly]

XA = merged into the 28

XH = see H/XH

XO = merged into the 57

Y = 70

Z = 35

The "not changed [yet]" note on the remaining lettered routes means that sometime in the future SEPTA may change the route and give it a number as it has been past practice.

Now the Red Arrow Letter/Number conversion [note, Red Arrow bus routes have frequently mutated over the last 3 decades so this conversion is mostly approximate.]

A [Aronimink] = 111

B [Westbrook Park] = 107

C [Ardmore] = 103

D = unknown, probably not used

E [Springfield Rd] this rush-hour single trip route was renamed 68 in the 70's, then was expanded to be a non-rush 71 [Delco Shoppers' Special linked all major Delco shopping areas from Ardmore to Springfield to Darby] before abandoned in the early 70's.

F [Pembroke Ave/Oakview] = 113

G, I = merged route became the 105

H [Darby-Ardmore] = 83 then renumbered to current 115

J [67th and Elmwood]= 108

K = 69 [This was the rush-hour 2 trip Bala to Manayunk route, now abandoned]

L = long-dead bus route.

M [Lansdowne-Darby] = 113 [part of route went to the 107. After becoming the 113, that route was later combined with the 76 MacDade Blvd route to form the present route.]

N = Long-dead trolley then bus route.

O [Baltimore Pk-Chester]= 109

P [Briarcliffe, Essington] = was extended part of the B [107] bus now abandoned

Q, R, S, T, U, V, = unknown. Many were "ghost" routes that disappeared by 1970. Q, T, and U were never used, and the V's rights were sold to Schuylkill Valley Lines in the 60's.

W [West Chester] = 104

X [Twp Line Rd] = 110 [this route originally ran to Broomall, then rerouted the other way to Springfield and Media]

Y [Overbrook Park-Ardmore] = 106

Z [Overbrook-Paoli] = renumbered to the 71 in the late 70's, then merged into the 105.

SEPTA eliminated lettered routes at Red Arrow [Victory] in 1980 to avoid duplication with the lettered routed in the CTD, and to intergrate the RAD into the general structure of SEPTA. RAD was sort-of a separate subsidiary of SEPTA in the 70's. The 1980 reorganization merged Red Arrow and Frontier into a single Suburban division, with the former PTC being the City Division.

Thanks for the info. I have incorporated some of the information in edits to my post.

Two comments.

A Local pretty much morphed into the 32 on the basic non-expressway/below East Falls route. The Upper Ridge/Upper Henry locals disappeared as stand-alones and 9/27 took over this operation with all runs on the Expressway.

V became 49 in the early 60's to reflect its operation on 49th St (at about the same time the old 72 became 52 to reflect 52nd St). 49 was absorbed by 64 in the reorganizations in the early 80's.

You're correct - thought I typed 70 but must have slipped.

SEPTA had several routes that were identified by names. These named routes either were changed to numbers or abandoned. Currently two "Named" routes are operating, one is the LUCY [Loop thru University CitY] line [the unofficial route number is Rt 316], the other is the free Cornwells Heights Parking Shuttle [Route 312].

Here are the named routes and thir current numbers [or current fate]:

Airport Express = this premium-fare line used modified Fishbowls [1970 T6H 5306's 4406=4410, then Neoplan BD 8455-60] on a route that ran from 5th and Market to the Airport. This route started in the early 70's and died in 1985 when the Airport Rail Line [R1] began operating.

Blvd Ltd [Roosevelt Blvd, Hunting Park and City Aves] = 1

Cultural Loop = this bus ran from Independence Mall to the Art Museum on weekends. This type of route was copied by the NYCTA [3 "Culture Bus" routes M41, B88, and Bx56], Baltimore MTA and the CTA.
This route died in the late 70's, but later revived in some form by the 76 [Ben Frankline]. Much of the current route is today covered by the PHLASH bus route.

FOX [Frankford-Olney Express] = 8

Ft. Washington Exp [on route signs. it was simply marked "EXP"] = became the 4 then abandoned shortly after SEPTA created the 201.

Horsham Breeze = 310 [and abandoned 311]

Mid-City Loop = this morphed into the 76 [Ben Frankline], then that was morphed into the short-lived "Spree" line [route # either was the 76 or 200], then finally abandoned.

Penns Loop [Market and Walnut 2nd to 22nd sts] = abandoned in the 80's.

Shoppers' Special = These weren't really named routes [they had their own subset of numbers from 1 to 9], but this was a special off-peak express bus service that linked outlying areas of the city to Center City, especially Market St East. These routes died in the early 80's.

Don't forget Shoppers Specials 10 and 11 that came along fairly late in the game.

There were also many Race Track Specials (to Liberty Bell Park, where Franklin Mills now stands) that to the best of my knowledge never carried numbers.
