SUFFOLK—City officials said on Monday that they may cut tied with HRT and hire a private firm.
The ending of HRT buses in Suffolk would be part of an effort to save money.
Many wonder what this would mean for budget-strapped cities across Hampton Roads.
Sherry Bennet takes the 71 Obici bus to work every day. She is one of many residents who depend on Hampton Roads Transit to get around town. When she heard that HRT is looking to cut its four bus routes in half, she was shocked.
“If they are going to cut buses, I don't think that's fair to others trying to have something,” she said.
HRT said low ridership is one reason to cut the lines.
Now the cash-strapped city of Suffolk is considering cutting ties with HRT altogether.
“Sometimes there are bus drivers and empty buses circling the city,” said
Even if the city continues to pay for the two routes, it would still have to pay a $200,000 administrative fee. It’s a flat fee that all participating cities pay whether they have two routes or 30.
City councilman and HRT board member Charles Brown doesn’t see that as the best use of taxpayers’ money.
“If we no longer use HRT, we have to come up with another solution, one that is more effective than what we have now,” he said.
While the city looks for a different solution, administrators are proposing to keep HRT services until the end of the year.
“We would like to do it in a shorter time frame than that. There are many providers throughout the state,” said Brown.

Hmm...things seem to be pushing back towards having private operators run things again...I wonder what will end up happening with Suffolk...this is Virginia, right?
