They were inherited from the Reading. They were gone before SEPTA took over operation of the regional rail lines. |

Inherited from the Reading, 3 units came 2 for a set with one on each end and a protect unit. Ran on trains 4 and 7 to and from Reading since they were based there as Conrail did most the work on them. Sometimes ran to Bethlehem during the winter for snow removal as the RDCs are to light. They stopped being used when main diesel service stopped in 1981. IIRC they werent used on the Newark runs. Used to be 900(4371) 902(4372) and 903(4373) outta a 8 unit fleet(900-907). All 3 ex septa survive but only 902/903 run. |

Awesome photos, where and when were they taken? In addition, would that be the correct livery if they were taken out of service in 1981? |

It is the correct livery. That livery was applies to the new-look GM/Flxible buses, the AMG trackless, and the Kawasaki trolley cars. Some of the ex-PRR Mp54's and Reading Bluebells got the livery in the late 70's. That livery came into being in 1977. It was modified in 1980 [to the narrow stripe] with the arrival of the RTS buses and was applied to the Neoplans when they came in new. The K-cars and AMG Trolleys got it as they were repainted. as well as a few New looks. The narrow stripe was applies to all of the NHSL cars as well, and the Bombadier Push-Pull cars and AEM locomotives. The current SEPTA livery arrived when the NABI's arrived in 1996. The Neoplans, AMG Trolleys and the K-cars quickly followed in the NABI style, and it is the standard style used now. Edited by Mark, Jun 25 2011, 10:24 AM.

What made these trains "push pulls"? Were they push pulls in the modern sense, with a cab car? If so, what were the cab cars - are those the ones that are pictured as they appear to be MUs? I keep seeing that one picture with the two engines at the end of the train with the coach cars (from some era) in the middle. Was that how they always ran? |

The cars were not stripped blueliners like what west chester and others have but legit reading coaches. As for your other question on average it was engine-5/7 cars-engine. In a sence it was push pull becuase both engines were on and only controlled at one end control would be of the leading end and would switch to the other cab headed back. Now they did pull MUs (blueliners) in the event they had to but that wasnt the normal consist. |

I remember one time in '78 or '79, my dad made plans with a friend to take myself & my brother with them to Philly from Bethlehem. His friend want to ride the push/pull, so the plan was to take the RDC to Reading Terminal. Then catch the train to Reading. My dad got a hold of a phone number for someone at either SEPTA or Conrail to find out if it would be on the Reading run that weekend. The guy said he'd put it on the Bethlehem run. When it arrived it was still in Reading colors. Also, I want to say that it was a Pull/Pull. Granted it was over 30 years ago, but I'm pretty sure that the engines were on both ends. One thing I'm certain of, is that it had terrible acceleration. It was late at every stop all the way to Reading Terminal. |
