Friday, I had the fortune to get a ride on NFI's newest bus model the XCELSIOR. I rode two of them in Queens [NYC]. The first one was a packed bus on the Q2 to Belmont Park. The bus ran smooth and took the somewhat bumpy streets of NYC quite well. The bus also held crowds quite well for a low-floor bus. I rode this bus to Springfield Blvd and Hempstead Ave., just a few short blocks from the Q2's terminal at the entrance of Belmot park Racetrack. The second bus I rode on [pictured below] was on the long Q27 run from Springfield and Hempstead to Main and Roosevelt in Downtown Flushing [and the end of the & subway line]. Since the bus was not a hybrid, but a straight diesel, I was amazed at how quiet the engine was, and the smoothe ride was more pronounced on the somewhar smoother streets in the less-trafficked sections of Flushing. Bus 4829 is quite a looker in NYC MTA blue and white. i wonder how it would look in SEPTA's scheme [unwrapped, of course.]

The only place you can find the Xcelsior[4800 series] is in Eastern Queens, specifically the bus routes out of the Queens Village Depot [Q1, 2, 27, 36, 43, 46, 83]. By spring, you can ride them in Southern Brooklyn [Ulmer Park Depot], and on Staten Island [Castleton Depot]. They are the same depots running the Nova LFS [8000 series] and Orion 7 3g Diesel buses[7000 series]. |

And soon, so will CATA in State College. They are expecting 11 of them any day now, with CNG power, of course. |

Those run number boxes have been in use for over 35 years. Its easier to fix, cheaper to maintain, and easier to change during the small number of routes that have a mid-run driver switch. Dont have to punch in another code just to switch the run number. Our subways, on the other hand, have more 21st century tech than any other subway train in the US! (dont care what anyone says!LOL) Edited by Far Rock Depot, Dec 21 2011, 05:19 PM.
