Next month will the last month SEPTA will run bus Route C. It's not leaving or going anywhere, SEPTA is renaming the one route with two divisions to alleviate confusion between the Nedro Division & Cheltenham Division.

Last Thursday, I rode the Ogontz Division and now I'm planning and most likely going to record a full-route ride on both divisions and possibly incorporate both videos into a documentary. YES, I know the C bus ain't changing just the numbers, but I feel there should be a video to look back on when the C was still the C.

So, does anyone have some interesting facts about Route C. Anything that involves Route C will be gratefully appreciated.

Also, both Route C videos of each division will be my first videos of 2012. Expect the videos at least by the end of January and documentary by the end of March.

Thank you in advance PTV Members & Happy New Years.

If someone could explain the very complicated rules of C transfers, that would be useful (hate to answer a question with a question, but...). I know the surcharge (I recall being 2 cents in the 60's, when I was first aware of it) had very odd rules and applied only where the C and subway overlapped, but there were other restrictions, etc. If I can get better explanations on these, I'll certainly be happy to add them.

I have a have 139 Route C schedules in my collection. Some date back to 1948. You are more than welcomed to use the collection for reference. That is why I collect transit schedules. My dad grew up at 9th & Luzerne. The Route C Fern Rock division which at that time was refered to ad the C Somerville division because it terminated at 10th & Somerville Sts. went by his house. He told me a story about the Route C. I will talk to you next time I see you on the bus. By the way I was thinking of getting the gang together and possibly riding the last C. I know it is a Fern Rock trip.

Route C has two (Broad-Geary) destination signs.

One from 11th-Nedro and the other from Cheltenham-Ogontz.

When did SEPTA discontinue the trips that ran from Broad-Geary to Cheltenham-Ogontz?

Until 2003, there was at least one trip that ran on the C to and from Broad and Geary to and from Cheltenham and Ogontz. This trip ran nightly, and it was usually the last C trip from Cheltenham and Ogontz Avenues. During the week, this block number was 858. On Saturdays, the block was 881. On Sundays, the block was 874.

Southern had a block on the Cheltenham division of route C. It was block 551. This was a weekday only block. It's last run ran from Cheltenham and Ogontz Avenues to Broad and Geary.

Route C began service May 28, 1925. An extension of the Route C known as the Route C-1 began service on January 24, 1926. The C-1 ran from Cheltenham and Ogontz to Cheltenham and Williw Grove Aves. Service on the C-1 was eliminated December 23, 1956.

The first full Route C schedule was not issued until SEPTA took over the PTC. This was sometime in 1969 or 1970. The C bus ran so often that only a schedule for the Naval Hospital and Late at Night trips were issued. OWL service was eliminated September 5, 1976 and was part of a massive service reduction at eliminating OWL services on many routes.

As I find more I will post it. Hopefully this will help you on your video quest.

UPDATE: As of 1/16/12 I currently recorded Full Route Cheltenham Division NB & SB. Going to cover the Nedro Divison NB & SB this wednesday.

Question: When coming up to a major connection intersection (For Ex: Broad-Oregon) heading NB or SB. Should I show a Route C pulling up to the intersection?

I might have the documentary released by possibly April or May, because I gonna do more recording once sunset is more later in the evening.

Cool, but don't forget that the C will be renamed next month.
