While everyone is basking in the Novabus hoopla, I have an important question: with the majority of Eldorados now soda cans, what will SEPTA do about the remaining Lawnmowers in the fleet? Replacing the Frontier, Victory and Midvale 'mowers with 40 footers is one thing, but what about the Lucy/Breeze Eldorados? Will SEPTA buy 30/35 footers separately for these lines? Nova doesn't make short buses, so where will these buses come from? New Flyer? NABI? Gillig? |

I don't know what the plan is but I did see an item in the FY 2013 Capital Budget that mentioned overhauls for the Eldorado fleet. Perhaps they will try to squeeze out as much as they can from these little buses though I would like to see some small low floors come in. SEPTA is also in need of replacing the remaining Champion cutaways. |

I don't thing it is a reasonable sense to have 40 footers serving on some short distance light routes like LUCY and Horsham Breeze since it cost more in terms of fuel and maintenance when carrying only a few number of people aboard it. No surprise if 40 footers were to be used in it. The cutaways including those at Krapf's for operations on 204 and 205 are still a doubt. |

Not only that, but wouldn't' there be some issues with TWU 234 if SEPTA attempted to run any vehicle longer than 29 ft. (or is it 30 ft.) on Lucy/Breeze? I have ridden 30 ft. Gillig Advantages in the suburbs of Denver and Minneapolis (in the latter case, to the Mall of America). Say what you want about Gilligs, but the 30 ft. version IMHO has a much more solid feel than our homely Eldos. Edited by MichaelBug, Mar 15 2012, 08:43 PM.

FWIW, they already overhauled the Eldorado fleet last year and the year before! |

Can't speak for Breeze, but LUCY has very busy but short peaks and that's it - the rest of the day, the buses run with very light loads. The last time I took one, I rode from 40th & Chestnut to Univ City Station alone at 5:30 on a weeknight. The op told me it was not unusual, that the peak ends on the line about 5:10 or so. |

And 40-footers won't fit too well in some of the places the 310 runs through..... |

Gillig LFs are technically referred to as 29ft buses. They can also seat up to 28 people...2 more than the Dorados although that may only refer to the single door versions. I'd say they'd be great minibuses for SEPTA...if Gillig would build a bus with roof A/C for the agency. I'd also say such Gilligs should replace the remaining Dorados and Champions at once as well. |

I've seen sardine-can Lucy Lawnmowers before. Especially in the AM.
