Hello, I'm curious as to whether anyone remembers as to when and if the 1983 Neo BDs(8435-8584), the Neo BMs(8601-8725) and Neo CDs(8726-8875) had the white baseboards in the interior of the buses. The baseboards were where the stop requested card, the control console(destination sign), the vents and the mirror above the front door were.

Also, did the Volvos have the white baseboards as well.

If any of you can pull up and scan me pictures of the interiors of the Volvos, and the "Pennliner" Neos(8435-8875) with their as delivered white baseboards, I would appreciate it.

On a side note, I grew up not too far from PTC/SEPTA's Germantown Depot, and when I was a child, they had the 8601-8670 and the 8726-8755 groups. I vividly remember several 8700 series Neos retaining their ribbed engine covers and white baseboards through their stay @ Germantown(even after it's closure on Sunday May 16, 1993). Such were 8738, 8741, 8751-8752 and 8754.

Just going from recollection but I believe the black boards came with the 3000-series Neos. I seem to recall that the Volvos had the black boards as well.

@ Transit Freak, thanks.

@ philabob, thanks. I miss those white bseboards on those Neoplans. I remember riding the Neo CDs with the white baseboards on the H, XH, L, 18 and 22 at night back in the late 1980s and I remember the glare that came from the baseboards and lights at night. I remember very well.

The first Neo DKs began to arrive on SEPTA property by the spring of 1987. If they came equipped with blackboards, then SEPTA probably began to repaint the blackboards on the entire Neoplan Pennliner fleet. The Neo AKs didn't start getting them until 1990 or 1991. At that time, 85 to 90 percent of the Neo AK transits and all of the Neo AK suburbans(except 8413) still retained the white baseboards and ribbed engine covers.

SEPTA Neo AK suburbans 8419 and possibly 8431 retained everything original until retirement.

The flat top section of the Neoplan engine covers, were themselves covers. They were placed OVER the original covers in later years when SEPTA began to sell ad space on them. The lower section of the engine covers were also ribbed at first.

In the spring of 1994, Victory's 8725 was destroyed by an engine fire. In the below photo, taken by a P&W operator that I knew at the time, you can see the remains of the original ribbed top & bottom portions.

The Neoplan DK's (& all Neoplans delievered after them) came with the black baseboards (bulkheads) as delivered, IIRC.

8413 was updated to the black baseboards (& larger destination sign as well) following a serious accident, & most of the other early Neos received them as they went through overhaul. I agree with CA that 8419 & 8431 (the latter of which I rode quite often in the early 90's when I was a daily rider on Routes 91 & 93) kept the white baseboards to their end.

I just wanted to say that even though I was born in 1987, it is with pleasure that the Neoplans are my firat and only love in the transit system. I was only 9 years old when my father allowed me to ride SEPTA on my own on 1996 and boy that was a cool year!!! Long live the Aks, BDs, BMs, and CDs!! The only bus I never got on was Neo AK transit 8289 from Frankford during its last year. Neoplan Forever.

Frankford had a cool sounding Neo AK transit right before it's retirement. Neo 8299. This bus sounded like a Neo ZFer. In fact, 8289 and 8299 both sounded like Neo ZFers to an extent. You would have liked Neo 8299.

In 1997, someone told me that the 8431 was still on Frontier property. Do you have any pictures of the 8431?

Do you remember the 8421? The 8421 was my third sighting of a Neo AK suburban. I spotted this bus in June 1993 on a Railworks shuttle. My other two sightings of Neo AK suburbans were back in 1991 @ Willow Grove Park Mall on the 98. I asked myself: where did these buses come from, because they weren't normal buses to me.

I grew up in West Oak Lane and the 8421 wasn't the regular bus on my block, but on that afternoon my pop was on vacation and as he was driving on Germantown Avenue he happened to come off of Germantown Avenue to turn onto Gowen Avenue. We came to the Mount Airy station on the Chestnut Hill East(R7) and that is when I spotted the 8421. The 8421 was sitting on Sprague and Gowen. 8421 had everything original.

Shortly after that, in or around the same spot, I spotted the 8417. By that time, the 8417 may have been rehabbed.

Mike, I miss these buses dearly. Every time I spotted one, I jsut wanted to run anc catch it and ride it to wherever. Those 8400 suburbans Frontier had were street and road runners.
