I watch with dismay on the 104, once we get past Newtown Square, how many people do not pay the zone fare. Do they think it's some kind of joke? The driver does his best to rattle them but to no avail. It's really unfair to those who faithfully pay. |

And the 104 used to be a 4 zone route. |

Do you think people back there were more honest, or the same as today? |

There are alot of routes that have Zone fares but nobody pays them. Eitheir the drivers dont say anything or people just dont pay it. Im not saying its right but thats how it is. The only routes i have actually seen Zone fares on is the 123, 124 and the 125.

As a daily rider on either the 22 and 55, which both have a fare zone beyond Willow Grove Mall, I was wondering the same thing myself. Up to a few months ago, I would hear that automated "This bus has multiple fare zones" announcement as it departed from Olney TC, regardless of whether it terminated at Willow Grove or went beyond. These days, I don't even hear that announcement ever being played.

I use to hear that announcement too, I guess they decided too take it off since nobody even pays a zone fare on the 22 and 55. When this zone fare stuff first started the drivers on the 22 and 55 would make people get off at the front to pay the extra 50 cents but most people argued and gave the drivers a hard time, not too long later drivers just stopped enforcing the zone fares. |

That may be the reason as to why we have high fares systemwide. The good ole boys @ Comly(14, 20 and 58) and Frankford(88 beyond Welsh and Kismet Roads in Pine Valley) simply didn't play that . One came correct with the fare plus zones or one simply didn't get on that bus. |

I've wondered for years why SEPTA even bothers with zone fares on transit at all. Even though there are fewer of them on SEPTA routes than at one time, they seem to be more trouble than their worth, IMHO. Also, how would they work with SEPTA's NPT project? The farebox may know that someone boarded the Route 104, but it can't possibly know WHERE someone boarded it, nor where that rider is getting off. |

The farebox may know that someone boarded the Route 104, but it can't possibly know WHERE someone boarded it, nor where that rider is getting off. The operator has to remember, and with all the duties of driving, it's difficult. The dishonest people cheat the system. My 104 has that announcement about zones. I've been riding transit longer than I can remember, most of it was in the city, with just one fare and transfer. By the time I rode linger suburban routes I was using a day pass or my senior card, so I never worried about zone fares. Edited by TransitChuckG, Aug 5 2012, 05:44 AM.

I rarely see zone fares enforced on the 110 or 111. The only route I see the zone fare collected regularly is the 123. That's because if you get off in King of Prussia obviously you boarded the bus before it gets on the Blue Route and Schukyll. The drivers collect it from everyone even the Transpass holders who try to sneak by. |
