[Cops told to wear helmets when driving motorcycles

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine National Police warned policemen on Saturday to wear their helmets when riding motorcycles and scooters around Metro Manila and other urban areas.

PNP Director General Avelino Razon told reporters that policemen caught riding without helmets would be immediately arrested by their fellow policemen.

“When policemen ride motorcycles, they should also wear helmets. Whoever is spotted without a helmet will be apprehended,” said Razon, himself a motorcycle rider.

He added that the PNP was enforcing a “no helmet, no travel” policy for private motorcycle riders on the city’s roads.

“The police are not exempted from that policy. Those who violate the policy are hard-headed, they should be arrested,” the PNP chief said.

Motorcycle rider groups and motorists have been complaining of policemen who insist on not wearing helmets when riding motorcycles and scooters despite the fact that private riders are flagged down by police for not wearing helmets.
