Martin, you're Swedish and therefore good at math. I task you with delivering an exacting integral calculus to map out "subjectivity". I'm not sure where you should start -- but obtaining a urine sample from Dirt is definitely an "in".

Start with automatically changing all sharon peters CONs to PROs. Counting my ratings twice would also be helpful.

Apparently I've seen 3 of the top 10 films from 2002.

There certainly are statistical methods for weighing means to reflect the number of values. I kind of like the way the lists are now though because it gives people incentive to watch these lesser-seen movies. I, for one, am now resolved to see what the fuss is over Kitchen Stories. I am skeptical of the merits of Cremaster 3 though, and Lagaan has never seemed like it'd be worth the time investment.

FWIW, here's how the IMDb calculates its ratings:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C where:

R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 1300)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.8)

That could easily be applied to the CDDB.

For example, Last Orders:

R= 4.2
v = 5
m = 5
C = 3.324

WR = (5 / (5+5)) x 4.2 + (5 / (5+5)) x 3.324 = 3.762 weighted rating

For The Fellowship of the Ring:

R = 4
v = 56
m = 5
C = 3.324

WR = (56 ÷ (56+5)) × 4 + (5 ÷ (56+5)) × 3.324 = 3.945 weighted rating

So now The Fellowship of the Ring actually has a higher rating than Last Orders. The only problem I see with this is that it will skew the ratings towards the years when we had a bunch of people participating in the CDDB project. It would be very hard for a current film to crack the top list now that less than half as many people vote.

There certainly are statistical methods for weighing means to reflect the number of values.

FWIW, here's how the IMDb calculates its ratings:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

Awesome. That is, it would be awesome if I understood the statistical relevance of the resultant from this equation. I've never liked statistics, probably because I've always sucked at it. :)

Still, it's something to work with.

Perhaps an additional WR where R and v would only include currently participating voters. LOTR would look something like:

Right. You could reduce the votes to only the people who still participate. Or we could create some sort of statistical cap, such that past a certain number of votes, an individual rating become exponentially less meaningful. But, really, I don't know what I'm talking about.

What does this mean? Every movie in the database? Dirt, if we came up with a good equation, how hard is it to apply to the CDDB?
