C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.8)

What does this mean? Every movie in the database? Dirt, if we came up with a good equation, how hard is it to apply to the CDDB?

Yes, 'C' is the mean rating for all the movie in the database. So far I've put everything from 1997-2005 in a master spreadsheet, and the mean works out to 3.327.

I think the equation the IMDb uses is fine. I guess the question is still up in the air as to whether to ignore users who aren't participating anymore. (My preference is to have both sets of ratings --even though the odds are long that we'll ever see ratings from geophos, Jeremy Heilman or Dr. Zira again, I still value the ratings that they did give.)

I'm doing some research, and I found this:

Quote:

The idea behind a bayesian average is that you normalize ratings by pushing them toward the average rating for your site, and you do that more for items with fewer ratings than those with more ratings. The basic formula looks like this:

b® = [ W(a) * a + W® * r ] / (W(a) + W®]

r = average rating for an item
W® = weight of that rating, which is the number of ratings
a = average rating for your collection
W(a) = weight of that average, which is an arbitrary number, but should be higher if you generally expect to have more ratings for your items; 100 is used here, for a database which expects many ratings per item
b® = new bayesian rating

Say three "shill" users had come onto your site and rated a brand new indie film a "10" because the producer asked them to. However, you use a bayesian average with a weight of 100, and thus 3 ratings won't move the movie very far from the average site rating of 6.50:

b® = [100 * 6.50 + 3 * 10] / (100 + 3)
b® = 680 / 103
b® = 6.60

Not exactly, but sort of what we could use.

The IMDb formula uses a bayesian mean as well.

It's pretty easy to apply rough calculations....just a tab harder to optimize for server/sql/web performance. I'm toying with putting up three formulas: the "vornporn method®", the "IMDb method", and the "post-RT posting method" and seeing how well they compare to each other. I'm probably just going to crunch the numbers first, without making an interface, and let the smart guys/gals here make the necessary tweaks to whatever equation they think best.

The ® in your equation confused me for a moment, until I realized that it should be ( r ) :P

Who would have expected "Pandora's Box" to be the perfect movie of all time?

I'm surprised how much Keaton is loved (8 films in the Top20) and how much Griffith is hated (all of his 3 films are in the bottom 11) in this neck of the woods.

C = 3.324

The current mean vote for all titles that have 5 or more votes is 3.63.

I've finished getting the release dates organized for the titles and I'm putting together a page that'll search by year, and display by averages, weighted (with an adjusted mean) or not.

I'm thinking of having the option to change the minimum amount of votes when doing a search which will, of course, also mean a different mean for all titles...but I can determine that programatically during real time.

Hardly!

This is an addition that I've been meaning to do since the beginning of the database. Plus I felt bad that you were doing all that work manually when it could be done programatically.

Oh, oh. It would seem that Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Dirt) has once again unraveled the hard work of Beaker (vornporn) – exploding his head, or setting his lab coat on fire, or some such.

Mean while Link Hogthrob (Mr. Jiggy) checks his hair.

worth repeating

... overheard this morning in The Barber boudoir.

All kidding aside, I'm finding this to be a very useful exercise. My own "to see" list has been updated to include most titles appearing in a top 20.
