I heard the cry. We need more lists. Let's start with...a Top Twenty - give me your twenty favorite characters from filmdom. It can be live action, documentary, animation, whatever. Feature length or short, doesn't matter. And it doesn't matter if their performances are considered lead roles, supporting, or even cameos. The character doesn't even have to be human. Just give me the name of the character, the film in which they appear, and, where applicable, the name of the actor or actress who played the character. Additional explanations for your love of said character(s) are welcome. No ranking unless you just want to.

You may want to take your time with this one.

Awesome! But difficult. I've got to think hard about what will be my selection criteria. And I will certainly need a scheduled deadline or I'll think/procrastinate forever about it. And, of course, I can't imagine how you would rank this...it would probably be a tie of 100+ characters for first place. Unless the results could mutate into a Vornporn death-match :)

It is not my intention to tabulate a consensus. Just to satisfy our curiosity and to perhaps spark some conversation and offer offbeat recommendations.

EDIT: But I'm open to suggestions!

I don't know how to not rank things.

Let's hear your top ten reasons for why you think that is.

Alright, my brothers and sisters, I have heard your pleas.

New rules for the current list: Send me a list of your twenty favorite characters in film as outlined in my initial post. No need to rank them. DO NOT POST THEM IN THIS THREAD. Your deadline is Monday, August 3. From your lists I will remove any duplicates and post a single master listing in this thread. From this master list, you will select and rank your 20 favorite characters. This list may differ from your first list as you will inevitably go, "DOH! How did I forget that one!? DO NOT POST THEM IN THIS THREAD. Send your ranked lists to me no later than Monday, August 17. There should be no partial lists. Your #1 ranked character will receive 20 points and your #20 ranked character will receice 1 point. I will compile the results and post them in this thread. There likely will be ties. Then we can see where we stand as a group with our brand spanking new consensus list.

Feel free to drum up character support here.

I had 20 minutes between meetings so I fooled around with a list of fave supporting characters in Coen Brothers films. THIS IS NOT A SUBMISSION FOR THIS POLL and I am therefore ignoring our good man Russ' plea not to post here (which plea he posted as I completed this hastily created list). Forgive me brother. P.S. AGAIN, THIS IS NOT MY LIST

Jon Polito as Johnny Caspar in Miller's Crossing
Steve Buscemi as Carl Showalter in Fargo
Fred Melamed as Sy Ableman in A Serious Man
John Goodman as Charlie Meadows in Barton Fink
Tony Shalhoub as Freddy Riedenschneider in The Man Who Wasn't There
Peter Stormare as Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo
Trey Wilson as Nathan Arizona in Raising Arizona
Matt Damon as LaBoeuf in True Grit
John Turturro as Bernie Bernbaum in Miller's Crossing
Jim True-Frost as Buzz in The Hudsucker Proxy
John Goodman as Big Dan Teague in O Brother Where Art Thou
Dan Hedaya as Julian Marty in Blood Simple
Woody Harrelson as Carson Wells in No Country for Old Men
Sam McMurray as Glen in Raising Arizona
Max Casella as Pappi Corsicato in Inside Llewyn Davis
John Turturro as Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski
Richard Jenkins as Ted in Burn After Reading
Michael Badalucco as Frank in The Man Who Wasn't There
David Huddleston as The Big Lebowski in The Big Lebowski
Garrett Hedlund as Johnny Five in Inside Llewyn Davis

OK, Russ needs more complicated rules. So, I suggest this, as a guideline - which is not really a rule per se, but is like a rule.

Duplicates: Russ, when we submit our list, you shall advise how many duplicates we have on our list. Then we will say, Russ, remove my duplicates and here are a few more selections. Or, we will not.

Here is why Russ should do this thing.

FIRST! The richer and deeper the short list, the better.

SECOND! I want to send my real top 20 list. I really do. But I know myself. And I know that I will remove characters from my own list because I think someone else will also vote for them. Also, everyone else will do this exact thing.

For instance - let's imagine that I am vornporn.

At the very moment that I, meaning vornporn, am typing the words: "Jody (the Yearling)", I/vornporn will think "Karim loves movies like these. Karim will vote Jody. I will switch my vote to: The Talking Baby (Look Who's Talking)."

Strategically, this is the right thing to do. But, in this scenario, am I/vornporn really being true to myself/Abe Vigoda? No.

So, Russ will do this thing. AND THE LIST WILL BE PURE!

If Russ does not do this thing, then I will deploy SUBLIMINAL AND NEFARIOUS means in this thread (and probably others) to influence people, mostly Dirt, to list characters that I want to list myself, but won't. Now, Jiminy Cricket, nobody wants me to do this (non-stop and constantly). But, frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.

So, what if everyone removes their duplicates and resubmits. Does the original get removed from the complete list? Could like-minded individuals perpetuate the duplication paradox ad infinitum.

And why is Mr. Jiggy posting his list in this thread?

I'm having a sudden wave of renewed love for Disney characters.

What you talkin bout Dirt (Gary Coleman as Arnold Drummond (nee Jackson) in Diff'rent Strokes, note to self pretend this is a film, include on list)

I watched half of Shirley Temple's (and John Ford's) Wee Willie Winkie last night and now must simple include Shirley Temple as Wee Willie Winkie in Wee Willie Winkie. Certainly better than "annoying moon-faced brat" Jody.

The original, by definition, is not a duplicate. It is the original.

There can be only one!

There can be only one!

Yes. There can be only one list...per person. I'm all for sticking with the modified mode made by Mr. Russ. His list, his rules, his effort to make it fun, interesting, and a great revelation of how much every person loves Disney insects.

Duplicates will show weight in the final judgement if they are known. If I listed Shirley Temple in Wee Willie Winkie, and I knew everyone else listed it, then I wouldn't lobby for it. But if I didn't know about duplicates, then I would defend that choice until hell bubbles over in fire and brimstone and stuff.

The purity of an honest list will prevail.

My list....half way done.

If we want to vote for a character who appears in several films, such as, say, Francis the Talking Mule, do we have to specify a particular title? What if some of us vote for him in Francis Joins the WACs, but others cite Francis in the Haunted House?

Seriously though, I was considering the Little Tramp for my list, without citing a specific title. But I'm not sure if that's kosher.
