I can do country lists. Only France and Japan would work for 100 titles, but I'm guessing most regulars would be more comfortable with 50. After France/Japan, the next most-seen foreign-language nations would be Germany and Italy for me. The trick with country lists will be defining whether some titles qualify, due to co-production, director/cast, language, etc. |

After all.....

I might be able to do a top 10 for a handful of countries, otherwise I think I would be hard-pressed to get a top 5 for most. Unfortunately I'd probably have to excuse myself from this consensus. It sure would be nice to see the results though. |

I'm not sure I'd like the fact that (for certain films, at least) we could technically include a film in a country's list based solely on its financing. For example, IMDb lists Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me as a France/U.S. co-production. I guess my point is, with all the co-produced films, how to ensure that a film isn't submitted for two (or more) country's lists? |

The easiest thing to do is probably to include language as a filter. So a French film has to be both 'Country=France' and 'Language=French.' Then you'd still have to add back in the silents. |

I recently did a country list on another forum for Germany. I was trying to make a call on Douglas Sirk's A Time to Love and a Time to Die, a U.S-West Germany co-production. IMDb lists the languages as English, German and Russian. The actors in the cast seemed to be a mix of English and German names, as did those that made up the crew. The decider? All the filming locations were in Germany. So, that's how it wound up in my German list (at #2). |

I think if we all use our better judgment and bring up cases like that one, we could reach a clear consensus on 99% of the films. That one is a particularly tough cases because you also have a German-born director whose most well-known work came out of the Hollywood system. I'd have leaned towards it being American since English is the predominantly spoken language (at least from my memory of it), but I can see both sides. Thanks for preparing us for the potential convoluted conversations ahead, Russ! ;) |

I'm up for it in theory. But I doubt I've seen 50 from certain countries, like Russia. I'm not even positive about Germany, though for years in which I'm close I could try to see some titles before the deadline. |

I was thinking more along the lines of submitting a MAX of 50 films with a minimum of around 20-25 (and probably lower once we get past the big 6 or 7). Really, I'm all for whatever gets the most people to participate. Since there are so many more potential films to see compared to the yearly lists, we may want to leave 6-8 weeks between each of these polls to give people time to dig in and get around to recommendations. |

Can't wait for the Hungary-Poland-Czech bloc. Which brings up another possibility: combining countries for list purposes where it makes sense (ie., New Zealand and Australia). |

Good stuff in here! Like Dirt, I'll struggle to come up with thorough lists, but given 6-8 weeks in between, and the goal of 20-50, seems doable and fun. |

Absolutely. NZ/Australia, Eastern bloc and Germany/Austria would all make sense to me. |

It's probably the only film from that year that you hadn't seen. |
