As far as I can tell, Russ hasn't seen a PTA film since Magnolia. :o |

It's a miracle that anyone stayed with Anderson after Magnolia. That said, it's the only film of his I didn't like (haven't seen Inherent Vice yet). I had just enough problems with There Will Be Blood to keep it off my list, but I rated it pro and would see it again with an open mind. |

Yeah, I should probably stop talking smack about this one. Never anything less than captivating on re-watch. If not satisfying. |

While we are all talking about True Detective, when you have one of those prison visitation scenes where two people are talking to each other through prison-visitation glass and using a prison-visitation telephone presumably because they can't hear each other otherwise, should the characters still be talking with each other after both have hung up? Or, I'm just nit picking? Kinda wish all of Vince Vaughn's scenes were transmitted through prison- visitation glass, without the intervention of a telephone. Anyhow - looking forward to "Vikings" Season 4, which I will discuss at length in the TD thread. |

PTA is one of those filmmakers whose films, inevitably, always seem to amount to less than the sum of their parts. He's an expert craftsman, no doubt, but his films seem to me to be constucted as a string of vignettes, tenuously linked by tonal whimsy. They're filling at the time of consumption, but an ultimate case of heartburn is all too predictable. Although i do want to see Inherent Vice. |

I don't think it'll change your mind, Russ. But then I love Magnolia and The Master, so what do I know? :) |

Honestly I think Inherent Vice is more like that description than any other PTA film. |

I really should see There will be blood. Probably no excuse for that omission. In baseball lingo, there is a term (a "player's manager") to describe a manager who has great chemistry with his players, in terms of motivation and looking after their players. Is it safe to classify PTA as an "actor's director"? He sure seems to be. |
