I wouldn't think that way. I suspect a lot of people who basically research this stuff for a living got a lot wrong. A handful of the races had two or three viable candidates for the winners' circle. |

Yeah, I came across this source that I liked, with a will win/could win/should win format: Oscar Predictions |

Random Oscarcast thoughts: Who did Gena Rowlands' lipstick? Sherwin-Williams? Oof. Still think it's disrespectful that they relegate these awards to a separate, non-televised show. Boy, that Stacey Dash bit bombed big time. I had a vague memory of her saying something controversial about race, but the bit treated it like it was some universal meme we'd all immediately get. I wonder how many millions of viewers worldwide were like "Stacey who?" And it bombed in the room, too, either because people didn't get it or they got it and thought it was lame. I understand the appeal of doing a piece like the one outside the Compton movie theater, but God, it's so pandering to the "common person." There's no shame in not having heard of Spotlight or Brooklyn or The Big Short, but it's nothing to be particularly proud of either. Asking non-cinephiles anything about films not designed to do blockbuster business is shooting fish in a barrel. The whole thing just feeds into the whole "Why can't the Oscars be more like the People's Choice Awards?" idiocy. Nice to see Ali G. show up! I assume the "Louis CK for 2016 host" movement has begun. The "thank you" ticker tape crawls looked ridiculous and didn't seem to have much effect on the speeches. The little explanatory text blurbs for the presenters were a bit distracting as well. I'm amazed that the one for Priyanka Chopra touted her Bollywood background rather than her starring role on ABC's Quantico. That took some real willpower from the network. I feel like a bad person when I find earnest political statements like Gaga's song number to be more embarrassing and exploitative than moving, but I can't help it. Obviously, I feel for all survivors of sexual abuse, but their coming out there en masse with the slogans on their arms and the earnest, tremulous expressions had me cringing. But maybe it was due more to the self-congratulatory context of the Oscars than anything else. I'm guessing Jenny Beaven wasn't dressed like that when she won 30 years ago for A Room with a View. Why can't every winner be like that one (probably half-plastered) Australian who won for Sound Editing? David White. He was elated. And he was wearing like a velour tux and puka shells or something. Awesome. |

Agreed. Though it looks like a perfect delivery system for goofs like the Ho Le Fuk prank. They went by me too fast to check if anyone pinched one out. I did like how they introduced the writing nominations...with text and narration from the apparent screenplay and the final filmed results. I could watch a whole movie like that. |

I also liked the clips for the sound categories that showcased the work of the nominees. |

Yeah, that was cool too. These pieces were much more entertaining than the *big* awards. Is this heresy? : I don't find Chris Rock to be particularly funny. |

Unintentionally funny Oscar moment I didn't notice, as pointed out by someone in a Vulture forum: My favorite part was where Jenny Beavan said "It could be horribly prophetic, Mad Max, if we're not kinder to each other, and if we don't stop polluting our atmosphere. So, you know, it could happen..." and suddenly the orchestra starts playing "Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be..." |
