Agree to disagree on Mad Max, but it is weird that it has become such a critical darling.

No kidding. I mean, on one hand, it's fascinating to see an action movie getting unanimous attention at the end of the year for once. In my view, the business has totally ignored genre material at awards season for way too long.

Golden Globes.

I am not at a computer and can't paste them in, but I'm sure you've all seen them.

Interesting that Vikander got in for Ex Machina. Sly got in. I'm pleased to see Cranston getting love for Trumbo, which I haven't seen, but I love the actor and character.

The Leftovers was snubbed. Not enough people watch it.

Interesting that Vikander got in for Ex Machina.

And for The Danish Girl, too, in the Best Actress - Drama category. The voters ignored the studios' wishes for both she and Rooney Mara to be considered Supporting, whereas SAG did not. It'll be interesting to see which way the Academy goes.

I don't know, there are several lower rated and less buzzed about shows nominated in the TV categories (Casual, Mozart in the Jungle, Outlander, Flesh and Bone). I guess with the streaming services we don't really know ratings, but I'd be surprised if any of those were more watched than The Leftovers, even if the latter isn't exactly a smash. The Globes' TV choices are often a bit eccentric in that they're just as likely to nominate a left-field first-season show as an established long-running hit.

Haven't seen many of these films, so I probably shouldn't judge, but... this year's crop looks pretty weak to me.

The consensus I've heard from smart people that watch lots of movies is that 2015 leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks for the clarification on Vikander, Yancy. I missed that second nom. I guess it pays to be a robot and/or Danish.

Best Motion Picture, Comedy

The Martian

I wasn't going to mention it because I haven't seen it and I try to avoid going to sites that might spoil anything for me, but this seemed odd. And I see it has some others scratching their heads.

Is it really a comedy?

The consensus I've heard from smart people that watch lots of movies is that 2015 leaves a lot to be desired.

Strange, the consensus for most of the people I follow is that 2015 is a stellar year or at least a good deal better than 2014. The more films I catch up on from the year, the more I tend to agree.

I also think Golden Globes nominations are rarely useful for determining how strong a year's crop of films is.

It no. The nomination, however, is a laugh riot!

Well, no, it's not written or performed as a comedy, even if there are plenty of laughs (carefully placed to alleviate tension), so the nomination doesn't really make much sense in that regard; but I suppose it's worth considering that the film is basically constructed as a series of binary problem-solving challenges: Can he achieve this? Y/N, where "Y/N" basically equates to "live or die"; and it's Ridley Scott directing, so he approaches the material in such a rigorously rational way that we kinda-sorta remain aloof from it all. You're invested emotionally (cuz let's face it, live or die is a conflict we can all relate to), but we're never really invested in the characters as living, breathing, complex (or even complicated) human beings. Richard Brody probably said this best (and offered the most accurate take on the film, imo) in his blog over at the New Yorker.

So in some sense, yes, it is a kind of comedy really. Though that sort of gives away the ending....

Whoever's in charge of the awards campaign for The Martian simply thought that it had enough humor in it that they might be able to get away with pushing it for the Comedy category, where it would have less big-time competition for a nomination. It worked!

And I mentioned this to Yancy on Fbook, because he is no doubt correct...but it's just a shame (as if I didn't already know it's all money and politics). It feels like it should be an award to recognize genuine comedies, an area that often gets little respect (or at least dramedies...The Martian doesn't even feel close to that sub-genre).

Trainwreck
Mistress America
Spy
Results
The Night Before

Etc.

Either most of the good movies I've yet to see, or this is the worst year of the decade.

Going by IMDb year, I've rated the following # of movies '75' or higher on the 100-pt scale:

2010: 22
2011: 20
2012: 22
2013: 23
2014: 23
2015: 7

I'm consistently around 20-23 movies a year passing that threshold. I'd have to get a pretty good hit rate on these to get up to that level:

Carol
Anomalisa
The Hateful Eight
The Assassin
Chi-Raq
Heart of a Dog
Bone Tomahawk
The Witch
Amy
Room
45 Years
Son of Saul
Mistress America
Tangerine
Right Now, Wrong Then
Queen of Earth
Taxi
Experimenter
James White
My Golden Days
