American Society of Cinematographers (ASC)

“Bridge of Spies” (Janusz Kaminski)
“Carol” (Ed Lachman)
“Mad Max: Fury Road” (John Seale)
“The Revenant” (Emmanuel Lubezki)
“Sicario” (Roger Deakins)

Hmm, no Hateful Eight. Robert Richardson has never won an ASC award despite three Oscar wins (JFK, The Aviator, Hugo), while Roger Deakins has won three ASC awards, but no Oscars.

Is it going to be Chivo again?

Whoa, I've actually seen three of these (1, 3, 5)! Miller has the best shot at a nod, I suppose.

I don't know about the DGA, but I've lately been wondering if Brooklyn might make a better showing at the Oscars than people are currently predicting. I haven't seen it, but it seems to inspire a lot of love, and it seems like a good fit for the Oscar demo. I'm gonna go out on a limb and call it a dark horse for Best Picture, even though I'm not sure Crowley can get a directing nod. I also think Ronan may have as good a shot at Best Actress as Brie Larson does.

Yeah, you're probably right, of my 5 noms, probably only George Miller will make the official 5 (maybe Tarantino?). Otherwise, probably some version of Scott, Inarritu, McCarthy...and I dunno. Will be interesting.

For me, Brooklyn is such a beautifully crafted film all around, top to bottom, that it's hard to not give Crowley a good deal of credit at the helm. I loved it, and am really pulling for Ronan to win...nothing against Brie Larson (she's quite good in Room), but Ronan truly shines.

I haven't seen Room, Brooklyn, or much of anything in contention besides Mad Max .. but often these things are a popularity contest and the Globes are a dress rehearsal for the Oscar voters. Brie conducted herself well enough to probably sway some voters.

Of course Michael Keaton made a great Globes speech last year and we know how that worked out.

You called it on Miller! Obviously, he'll be getting my vote.

Like the new category, will probably go with Nemes, though will seek out the couple I haven't seen

Will have to digest some to assess the surprises and (perceived) snubs - but will say that given the nature of the performances - if Leo and Tom Hardy can be nominated for The Revenant no reason why you couldn't nominate Charlize Theron for Mad Max (was she ever really in the conversation?).

I'm pretty up to speed having seen 7 of the 8 BP noms. Still need to see Room. Speaking of which, some trivia, both Brooklyn and Room are Canada/Ireland co-pros.

Adam McKay - Oscar nominated Director - who would have thought?

Jennifer Lawrence was good enough in Joy - but enough is enough.

I was with Yancy on the Brooklyn dark horse BP winner call but the lack of Director nom ain't helping.

Edit: Some may view as snubs: Kristen Stewart, Ridley Scott, Tarantino, Aaron Sorkin, Michael Keaton, Paul Dano, Carol & Inside/Out for BP

Random thoughts:

Category fraud triumphs.

Good day to be Sandy Powell.

Good day to be associated with Carol, unless you directed or produced it.

Good day to be associated with The Martian, unless your name is Ridley Scott.

Good day to be associated with Mad Max: Fury Road. Period.

Bad day to be associated with Creed, unless your name is Sylvester Stallone.

Bad day to be black, unless you wrote Straight Outta Compton -- oh wait, they're all white, too!

I thought everybody loved Idris Elba!

I hope Aaron Sorkin thanked everybody he wanted to at the Golden Globes.

Oh wait -- there's still the WGA awards for Sorkin and fellow nominees from Sicario, Trainwreck and Trumbo.

The Academy keeps on lovin' Robert Richardson more than the ASC does. He got Janusz Kaminski's spot.

Richardson, Morricone and Jennifer Jason Leigh for The Hateful Eight, but no Tarantino screenplay nod.

Why does the violence in The Hateful Eight give the Academy the vapors, but The Revenant is no sweat? Is it because the bear's not as scary as Sam Jackson, Kurt Russell, et al?

I think my notion that Brooklyn might become the first Best Picture winner with no director nod since Driving Miss Daisy is dead in the water. Only three nominations.

Oh, and since Birdman last year was made with the illusion of no editing, I guess we can assume the old "Best Picture winner always gets an editing nomination" is back in play. So the race is between The Big Short, Mad Max, The Revenant and Spotlight.

Tell your boy to get working - 13 film credits just ain't going to cut it :)

Sly has 66! I may have missed a few but I'm sure they are mostly all quality.
