Blingin' for Our Savior

Nope, that's pretty much what it is. Straightforward, feel-good romance. Nothing provocative about it. I just think it's really well-made feel-good romance. |

I look forward to the extended cut where Eilis, channeling Ronan's Hanna, snaps the shop keeper's neck after finding out that the Michael Collins letter is a fake. |

Even worse is the knowledge that they chose Sam Smith over Radiohead. The Radiohead tune over the SPECTRE title sequence. Lyrics (which although not a masterpiece or anything, are still pretty neat): I'm lost, I'm a ghost Dispossessed, taken host My hunger burns a bullet hole A spectre of my mortal soul These rumors and suspicion Anger is a poison The only truth that I could see Is when you put your lips to me Futures tricked by the past Spectre, how he laughs Fear puts a spell on us Always second-guessing love My hunger burns a bullet hole A spectre of my mortal soul The only truth that I can see Spectre has come for me |

So perhaps if I'd been taken by surprise, at a festival, or merely enticed by the presence of Ronan and a vague plot outline, I would have felt differently. But heading to the theater thinking, "Shit, can't wait -- this oughta be terrific!" based on early reviews maybe set me up for a (very slight) fall and now I wonder "Why all the fuss?" (Not Catholic either, so there's that.) Anyway, I agree, Conty (and Shay), this kinda thing is nice to have in a flashy, morally-relativist age. Still dunno about Best Pic though. (Edit: I feel you, T-Bick.) |

And shit yeah, k.c., that Radiohead theme is tha bomb! Can't imagine it actually in the movie, though. The cognitive dissonance is too great. Edit: Actually, it works great for the first few second, but then falls out of sync ... and the sequence is really too dumb to warrant it. Syncs back up towards the end, and al-most works ... but no. Way better track though. |

I kind of agree. The other is a much more traditional "Bond" type theme. This one is like kind of a nice Radiohead tune. And it's fairly sad too. Like... too sad. |

Sad, yeah. Like the way I feel anytime I'm about to sit through a Bond movie. |

The SAG award sculpture has got to be one of the ugliest awards sculpture ever. Oscar voting will be up on CDDB today...hopefully. There is weather today. |

DGA went with Iñárritu for The Revenant. Alex Garland got the First Time Feature Film Director award for Ex Machina. Among the winners in TV were David Nutter for Game of Thrones, Chris Addison for Veep and Dee Rees for the HBO movie Bessie. |

DiCaprio is the overwhelming favorite for the Oscar, and Inarritu now seems to have an edge for the directing award. However, at the moment The Revenant appears to be a bit behind both Spotlight and The Big Short in the Best Picture race. I found 24 previous occasions when the same film won both the Best Actor Oscar and the Best Director Oscar. In 22/24 instances, the movie also won the Best Picture award as well. The only exceptions were The Informer for 1935 and The Pianist for 2002. Doubtless you've already heard about the very rare possibility of Inarritu winning the directing award back to back, but it might not be the only piece of history in play at the ceremony this year. Just something to keep an eye on moving forward. By the way, my hat is off to the Best Animated Feature category for once again being perhaps the most reliable category for producing out-of-nowhere unexpected nominees. The winners for that award are usually routine, but the field is not. |
