I may have found my new avatar with that last pic.

He was great in Kiss of Death but wtf was that a career about. I like what he did in Judgment at Nuremberg....liked...not loved... he was still annoying at his almost monotone best.

Huh. Well, see him in Night and the City; you'll still find him annoying, but not monotone. As I said in my capsule, "Widmark is nothing short of electric in the kind of extreme performance that divides viewers (a couple of imdb comments dismiss him as 'annoying,' which is rather reductive, to say the least)."

I dunno, I've always generally liked him: Panic in the Streets, Don't Bother to Knock, Pickup on South Street, Two Rode Together, The Bedford Incident, Madigan, etc. I also liked him in Slattery's Hurricane, but in my capsule for that one I wrote, "The cast is good (although if Widmark sang one more drunken verse of 'Home on the Range' I would've thrown the TV out the window)..."

Count me in as another Widmark fan. Seen him in 32 films; but not Judgment in Nuremberg :o . Two other recos - both Westerns - The Last Wagon and Warlock. His oddest performance - Preminger's Saint Joan.

Widmark's performance in Panic in the Streets may be an antidote for people who find him grating (I usually like him a lot.). He's terrific and natural in it, especially in those great family / marital scenes.

Love that last screenshot. Makes it look like the film is about a fascist dystopia in which the land is ruled under the iron glove of Santa Claus.

Photo makes it look like the film was directed by Leni Riefenstahl.

Triumph of the Claus

Read all about it in the scholarly work "From Blitzen to Blitzkrieg: A History of the Clausreich." The most harrowing chapter is all about the horrors of Kringlenacht.

Here's the dialogue from this scene:

Santa: My lead reindeer has a big red nose!

Young man in crowd: How does he smell?

Santa: Awful!

Someone really should make a film about a nefarious Claus who satiates the pliant masses with gobs of presents, all the while chuckling from his stronghold in the North Pole, where he plots taking over other holidays (he's already invaded & occupied November).
