Total fail on my part! Missed this as a 1998 title. It would have been on my list. |

Truman Show is another one where I got a case of the "plausibles" in terms of the premise. Vorn's review in the db mentions that maybe the "reality' outside the show is ambiguous and may not even be "our world." If so, that might mitigate my major problem, which is I simply don't believe we live in a world that would ever allow a child to be raised on camera and continuously deceived for decades for the amusement of a viewing audience. Big Brother and Joe Schmoe and other reality shows are one thing; something like the Truman Show would involve an amendment to the constitution or something. I guess I have to learn to turn off that part of my brain so I can enjoy such films as the allegories they're intended to be. |

At some point, isn't this all just given circumstance? You have to allow some latitude for an outlandish premise to create its own ground. |

Well, I wouldn't say I HAVE to. :) But I am trying to figure out the common denominator among the films for which my lack of suspension of disbelief becomes an issue. Maybe it's something like this: Fantastic Voyage -- ridiculous premise that asks me to pretend science has achieved something in fiction that it hasn't in life, but it can be enjoyed on the level of escapist entertainment. Truman Show -- ridiculous premise that asks me to pretend our society could become one in which we allow the violation of a child's civil rights for the purposes of a TV show, but it wants me to take its "insights" seriously, as though such a thing could really happen. The latter is a higher hurdle for me, but I get that it's probably a minority reaction. Or maybe I just need the film to give me a little more back story or something. I just prefer stone cold realism, like It's a Wonderful Life. |

Home of the Weiners. Envy of all.

Hmmmm, I think 4 of the next 5 films all have legitimate shots at the No. 1 spot. Lots of fanboy favorites among them (I'm including myself in that designation, as I voted for all 5). What will happen next? |

Six of us voted for all five of the top five, but only Cassius had all five of the top five in his own top five. |
