To the Wonder is far from my favorite, but I didn't dislike it as much as I expected. My expectations were pretty low, as they are for the new one.

I'll make no secret that I'm in the tank for Malick, but sometimes it takes a second viewing. That was the case with The New World and The Thin Red Line, but The Tree of Life blew me away after the first viewing and I haven't revisited it in its entirety yet.

I find the "classic" Malick stuff (Badlands and Days of Heaven) very accessible. They feel like pretty "normal" linear stories with just a slightly off-kilter approach. A bit surprised that there is still some divisiveness on those. I get it for The Thin Red Line and later work, which are more esoteric and anti-narrative.

Badlands, maybe, but Days of Heaven has a way of eliding or minimizing major dramatic events that is very strange and goes against classical storytelling. And that mysterious ending.

vorn, awesome screencap for KoS.

Levon Helm (from the hereafter) said: Sure, my band doesn't make the list; but Daft Punk does!

Deer Hunter #1 - didn't see that coming for some reason.

The top three films were on a lot of lists, but weren't #1 on anyone's. 1978 was a weird year.

That's true, but still at least it's mostly a straightforward linear tale. Never really a question of "what is happening?" in the middle of it, at least as far as I remember.

Ya, at least two voters (Guy and Yancy) had #1s that didn't even make the list.

Yeah the entire order of the top 5 seemed weird, but 1978 is just that type of year. Aside from the Malick, the #1s were spread out. IMO it is one of the weaker years of the 70s even if Days of Heaven is one of my favorites of the decade.

Am I really the only participant who's seen the Pennies from Heaven miniseries with Bob Hoskins? Maybe not quite as great as The Singing Detective, but well worth the time investment.

Not a participant but PENNIES FROM HEAVEN is top five TV miniseries for me, I actually think it's better than THE SINGING DETECTIVE.

I am looking forward to Fox's To The Wonder live. Not so much to the Grease miniseries.

I am looking forward to Fox's To The Wonder live.

The original was practically a dance movie, with Olga Kurylenko twirling around in every scene.

Not sure who they'd cast, but I hope they retain Skinny Pete.
