I thought there should be a dedicated thread for FilmStruck, the new streaming service from TCM and Criterion, since several of us are likely to try it out. I'm not sure when I'll sign up. When it's available on AppleTV, it will only be for the 4th generation, which we don't have. We don't have a Firestick or Roku or any of the other devices it will be available on (either now or in the nearish future). We should be able to watch via AirPlay (though I'm a little wary of that -- it works pretty well with Amazon Prime, but lots of problems with it when watching via the CW's app). After looking over the FilmStruck site, my biggest worry is that lots of films that are (soon to be were) streaming on Hulu aren't making the transition. It's possible that they simply haven't put them all up yet, but it's also possible they were being a bit disingenuous with the way they've been promoting their wares. They've said FilmStruck's Criterion Channel will be home to the largest number of Criterion titles available for streaming -- but of course that's not the same thing as saying everything that was on Hulu will be included. They could drop a ton of stuff and still have the most Criterion content available. A cursory search reveals that several Hulu titles from Naruse, Imamura and Kobayashi, for instance, have been dropped. If there's a way to pull up all library titles in a text list, I haven't found it yet. You have to scroll through thumbnails of each title's artwork, and it's slow going. It's their first day up, so naturally I'll cut them some slack. And it will undoubtedly be worth having even if some great stuff got left behind. We'll see. |

Here's a pretty comprehensive list of what was on there at launch. People have also been noting that new titles have been popping up and suggesting that once the Criterion titles expire from Hulu next week, even more will show up. I agree it's a little disingenuous of them or at least strange that they wouldn't just say whether or not everything from Hulu will transfer over. That said, I believe there are a number of Criterion titles on there already that weren't on Hulu. Either way, I'm 100% on board as soon as it's Roku-ready. |

I hear that Canadians have a way of subscribing over VPN. I'm not tech savvy enough to understand how that works. If you haven't subscribed yet, I would wait. There are a lot of bugs still and not all the titles are there. They extended the subscriptions for people in the Beta until the end of the year so I have access, and the service is better than the beta, but I really wish they would have incorporated some of the popular suggestions. Still, it is far better than most other streaming services just based on selection alone. |

Yes. The first page of that letterboxd list alone has more films I want to see than the whole Netflix catalogue has ever had. |
