We are being told to be prepared for a magnitude 8 or above earthquake. Of course, I have been hearing this since we moved here, but now the paper is saying that some knowledgeable authority is prognosticating that we will have a magnitude 7.8; 8.0 , or Greater earthquake. Where do they get these ideas? I know that if I think about it, I am frightened, but I am going to put up some water, dog food, and some non-perishables, and pray/hope for the best which is nothing, IMHO! Yikes! Do you think people are just trying to have their name in the paper, or do the scientists really believe that this terrible earthquake will occur?

Living in So Cal, they are always saying the "Big One" is due. I think we all need to prepare for emergencies (I am actually more worried about wildfires than earthquakes); food, water, meds, etc... Then don't worry, we can't change it anyhow. Sit back and read a good book..... |

Don't worry too much about it susiq. It's the way the media gets right after something major happens (in your case, an earthquake you told us about a few days ago). I know when the anthrax scare happened here in DC that's ALL they talked about for the next few days and weeks. It got so bad, people started worrying about chemical/biological/nuclear attacks. After this scare, the media talked to experts that talked about the chances for any of the above attacks happening were high and blah, blah, blah. So many people had to watch this on their local news broadcasts, it was crazy. Of course, it all died down, and the chances for such terrorists attack especially living in DC is still higher than normal compared to other cities but all you can do is prepare like it's any other emergency and go about your daily lives. |

Epic Saga

I live in Arkansas just west of Memphis. The epicenter of the 1811 (I think that was the year, any way you know the one I'm talking about) great quake is about 6 - 10 miles from where I live. (They originally thought the epicenter was New Madrid MO , thus New Madrid fault, but now they think the epicenter was here in Arkansas). That quake made the Mississippi River flow backward, moved the corse west, mad Real Foot Lake (sp), and this ridge of rolling hills 5 miles from where I live in the middle of flat delta land. Anyway, I tell you all this because every couple of years we have this earthquake preparedness, someone predicts major earthquake thing. A person should always be prepared, but they just can't predict when this will happen. One time a person predicted this earthquake on a certain day...Some people stock piled and told their kids good-bye and everyone talked about it for months, then nothing. The earthquake the other day was felt here, and I have felt several over my life. Just have an earthquake plan, and hope everything will be well. The worst part for us is we live in Mississppi River delta and the whole area is a drained swamp, so they tell us the ground is so soft so deep everything will sink and be buried if we have another large quake. |

I slept through the earthquake last week (I have a really good mattress). Anyway I had just dropped my daughter off at school when they started talking about it on the radio, and all day all I could think about is does she really know what to do if there is an earthquake, so we talked about it when I picked her up from school, and I have to say the school has done a really good job with the earthquake drills. We talked about what we would do outside of school. From now on I am going to try to talk to her about it more frequently. |

My sister works for the Red Cross here in Western Washington (where we have more than our share of earthquake faults), so we get a lot of good disaster preparedness information from her. When talking about natural disasters, all you can do is have a plan - make sure you have an out of state contact and all of your loved ones have the number. Long distance phone lines are almost always working before local lines and messages can be relayed so at least you'll know that everyone is ok, even if you can't physically be together. Know what the most likely disasters to hit your area are and what actions should be taken in each case. Know your area's evacuation routes. Have a disaster kit that has nonperishable food, water, extra clothing, first aid kit, flashlight & batteries, battery operated radio, extra batteries (duh!!!), etc. If you want a more detailed list of what should be included, the Red Cross has all the information you could ever need at: http://www.redcross.org/services/prepare/0...,0_239_,00.html. The Red Cross has had a lot of bad press in the past few years about mismanagement, etc. but when it comes to preparing for emergency situations, you can't do any better! Most importantly, be prepared, but don't stress about what might happen. If "the big one" is going to hit, it's going to hit, and worrying about it isn't going to change anything. The vast majority of people (fortunately) will never have to deal with a disaster situation first-hand, and if you happen to be among the unfortunate few who do, a relatively small amount of preparation can make you not only better able to handle the situation for yourself, but also to help others who may not be as well prepared as you are. Ok, I'm done now! |

Susiq2 - One more thing to keep in mind. When the experts (whoever they may be) say we're "due" for a major earthquake, they're speaking in geologic terms, and it could happen anytime from tomorrow to 100 years or more from now. They've been telling us for over 10 years that we're overdue for a big one here, too. So far, nobody has come up with an accurate way to predict earthquakes. They can show trends and look at past patterns, etc. but that's about it!

Yah, I hate experts sometimes.... Make you worry for nothing, you can't change it or predict it, so the worrying can drive a person to distraction! I think you gave a lot of good advice. |
