I live on a highway so I don't really get to hear nature that much but every morning the woodpecker wakes me up. There was a pause in traffic and I just heard it again. It's such a cool sound. Yesterday a cardinal was calling it's mate in the dogwood tree right outside my window. Sometimes I think I would like living in the country better but I honestly think I'd miss all the traffic noise. |

Some mornings I can hear a woodpecker too. I really like mourning doves, they sound pretty when they make their calls in the morning.

I live in an apartment complex that was built about 5 years ago. Across from my building, there used to be this ridge, with a wooded area beyond. When I'd go out to walk my dog at night, I would always hear an owl hooting in the darkness, and it always brought a smile to my face. About a year ago, the apartment complex leveled the woods and built a second phase of our complex. And when I'd go out at night to walk my dog, there was no more hooting from the owl. But the other night I was out with Bandit, and I heard him! I heard a hoot! Maybe it's not the same owl, but I was sooooo glad to hear that hoot. It made me happy. |

Does an owl really sound like it's "hooting"? I've never heard an owl before. There's a red-tailed hawk that lives near me and it's wonderful to watch it flying overhead. I've seen deer, foxes, raccoons, and even a snake (yikes! LOL). I love to bird watch, I think birds are so cute, especially the ordinary sparrows. |

Yeah, it does. It sounds like WHOO! Reminds me of this cartoon I have taped to my monitor at work. It's got three owls sitting on a tree brach at night, two of them together, and one of them a little farther out on the branch. The first owl is saying "WHOM! WHOM!" and the second owl turns to the third owl and says, "She never lets us forget she was an English major." |

We have woodpeckers, too, and they've been known to wake up all the neighbors REALLY early on summer mornings. We also have a lot of robins and steller's jays (beautiful but can be really loud and obnoxious), and occasionally if we get real lucky we'll see a bald eagle soaring over - amazing! Our area is well within their normal winter habitat, but I've only actually seen 2 in all the years we've lived here. The most recent was just about a month ago circling over the lake, looking for lunch! I think they tend to feed in the rivers more than the lakes, which is why we don't see them very often. Living out in the woods and right on the lake, we see a lot of wildlife - bunnies (the wild kind!!!), chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, beavers, and this winter we had a deer that showed up in our yard on almost a daily basis. One day she brought friends with her and we had a party of 4 out back for a while. They're all so much fun to watch! |

That's so cool, having an owl near by. I also love cardinals, they are so pretty. Housefinches are cute. I've seen a couple of bluebirds and yellowfinches too (only during the spring/summer months though). I really get excited to see yellowfinches flying around, they are so bright and cheery looking, you can't help but get your spirits lifted when you spot one. |
