I've known about this since like as far back as March, but I kept feet-dragging about it. hairpull

Anyhow, if you read 50% Harlequin books and have an account (or you can sign up for one for free), if you make a review (or even just a record, it seems... ), Harlequin will donate a book to the National Center for Family Literacy for each review.

I don't know when the cut off is for the end of this year (there aren't any clocks on the site!), but it looks like midnight. This is only useful if you remember what you might have read for the last year though. Bowgirl rbhead RRthud

Anyhow, since I brought it up so late, at least it's early for *next* year. rbhead beercheer

But it's 6:32 pm when I finally put up my first review. I hope it counts since they only ask for 2 or 3 small things on the form.

I read Harlequins every once in a while and I like to write reviews so this should be something I should check out!

I just wanted to add when I ended up signing up for Harlequin's "Inside Romance" newsletter (although the format has changed from pages size of 8x11 to a small daytimer of about 3x5) that got delivered by mail, there was a note that they would be giving away one free book to everyone woman in America on Jan 29th (I might have to double-check that date, since I read it at least a month ago and the wording isn't precise) and so it's probably an e-book. There "Inside Romance" here, even the current issue that has the info. http://offers.eharlequin.com/insideromance/

However, just to warn you when I last dealt with free ebooks on their site (which was a secret thing that happened near the end of December), I had to sign up for an account for the store and somehow picking up the format and being able to read the text of the ebook didn't happen when I tried on 2 different days. I 'lost' 2 books that I dealt with, although 1 of them I was "meh" (didn't really care) about. But also note that I don't use Adobe Acrobat but use another pdf reader. (I don't like how Adobe stays open running in the background until you shut down or restart if you open a pdf file.)

Check http://community.eharlequin.com/forums/book-buzz/digital-clinic-lorie just in case it's the complicated route I'm mentioning. (I guess this is their way or benefit to have more people use their ebook store, because if I wasn't getting a free ebook out of it, I probably wouldn't have bothered with it, or even a purchase method, although I don't really buy books even at stores.)

And for Feb 14th, the same type of announcement was made in the booklet regarding free books (ebooks...?) on that day too. Although you might know this if you looked at the books released for February by Harlequin, since there were ads on the front of their books and clarification on the extra pages that weren't part of the novel. I didn't know that the stuff put out last year (and maybe everything before it?) was fairly temporary and didn't remember to try to look for it until it seemed like it had never happened, which was about March.

And there's also free online reads on their site, which seem like a complete book too! I was so surprised when I saw this and thought, 'This must be an accident, right? They accidentally left something for us for *free* on the site that is equal to a book?' Or also, 'Once the month is up they will take away the book!' But it seems not, or not yet anyways, and I've been on the site for months, even if I'm not really a regular.

I'm sure if I didn't screw up dealing with ebooks and the estore during Christmas, I probably would've been kicking myself when they gave free ones on Harlequin Historical ebooks that started last Nov and screwing it up then, although I forgot about the expiry date on the offer, but I was thinking "Oh my gosh... hairpull " when I tried to go through it. (I even tried looking for other people that might have been able to download all 4 available, although a person supposedly only got to pick 1, and uploaded them somewhere that Google could find them. wtch ) I still haven't mentioned the Harlequin Ambassadors program too. (I think I'll get around to that later, especially since I should be getting sleep right, instead. :o   )

Oh yeah, and "Inside Romance" mentions that since the 60th anniversary is traditionally a diamond gift (and I think it's every 10th anniversary after that in some place I looked up or in the booklet), the best engagement story submitted to them will be award a diamond, although there's some tie-in with, I think, their Diamond Brides series. (I wrote this part before I thought to link, since linking seemed so close to advertising/promoting.  )

But the reason why I sort of held back on saying this stuff is because I felt like I was going to become a walking advertisement for Harlequin. Or even that it was "I already knew that" (and by "I" I actually mean most or all of the people in the forum beercheer ), "You're boring me," etc. elctrc And because I mention so much info (and there's so whining about the ebook store... ), and the praise might (or probably would) show through my words. Or just look at how much I wrote. frty Shocki

Just checked this out, and they have 16 books to choose from and you can download as many of them as you want. They're unprotected, available in 3 or 4 different formats, and they actually encourage you to share them with your friends. Best part is you don't have to give them ANY info (not even your email address) to get them. I don't read Harlequins much, but sometimes, and it can't hurt to have a few on hand, right??? ;)

Here's the website where the downloads are available: http://www.harlequincelebrates.com/index.php

Thanks for the info, Takiko!

I am reading one of the free ones right now. You just have to go to the site and download them, they had a link on the Smart Bitches website.

Pretty cool.

From what I saw it looks like this is something they may be doing periodically all year. The next giveaway is scheduled for Valentine's day.
