Hello there guys.
Susiq2 just cell phoned me and asked me to come on line and tell you her whole town of madisonville, kentucky is out of power. She is living in front of her fireplace right now, They might not get back power till middle of February.
She might be sent to her sisters house.
She asked me to tell you all ,she misses you and wanted you all to know if you don't hear from her, it is because of the power outage.
My heart and prayers go out to her and her husband!
Hope she gets her power back soon.
Heather

Best wishes go to Susie and her family..Could I ask - what has caused the power failure ?..Is there a reason why it will take so long to fix ?... the reason I ask ...The electricity companies over here get penalised for delays in fixing power failures and as customers we would be compensated for every hour without power after a certain time.. it would be very unusual for us to be without power for more than a few hours..

It was a major ice storm. Parts of the country got up to 3" of ice! Lots of downed trees leading to lots of downed power lines. With so much damage it takes a long time to get it all working again. I hope the predictions prove too long for her sake and the power is back on quickly!

Not to mention fed, clean and hydrated!

Our longest outage was 4 days after a snow and ice storm, that was bad enough! We were doing all of our cooking on the burner on the BBQ. We buried some of our food in the snow to keep it cold. And ran out of water the morning before the power came back on, the well pump runs on electricity. And the fireplace just barely made a dent in the cold, so we huddled in front of it in many layers of clothing and blankets.

Then we bought a generator :) It won't get us all the way back to normal, but it will help!

Certainly brings home how different our lives are ...we long for snow here and are thrilled to get a couple of centimetres -however ....when it happens everything grinds to a halt - roads become slippy , trains are late ...good job we don't have the amount you do - the whole bloomin country would collapse !

Our longest power outage when we were here was about 36 hours (there was a 4 day one a couple of years ago, but we weren't here), and it was no fun at all. Our holding tank is tiny, so we have only a few gallons of water after we lose power - maybe 3 or 4 flushes :P After that I was hauling buckets of water from the lake (through the snow). Not nearly as much snow as we had this year of course, but a few inches does make walking carrying an extra 60-80 lbs of water tricky. Fortunately our woodstove has a flat top that is actually pretty good for cooking - you can do just about anything you'd do on a stovetop, but you have to watch it because it's next to impossible to regulate. The woodstove heats the main living area pretty well, too, so the bedrooms got cold, but extra blankets solved that problem.

We're fairly well prepared - as much as we can be without having a generator, and I can't imagine how hard it would be to be without power for 2 weeks or longer. If you live in an area that doesn't normally have outages and are not prepared for it, it would be a nightmare - even if you don't lose your water!

Hope everything is going ok for SusiQ and they get the power back online quicker than expected!

My concern is the temperature without power. One thing to be without it in warmer weather, but this is far worse.

Yeah, the cold is the major issue. In SusiQ's case I wouldn't be too worried about her or her husband personally, because Heather did say they have a fireplace, and they have somewhere to go if it becomes necessary. In their case the biggest problem they may have from the cold is probably frozen/broken pipes. Been there, done that, and it wasn't any fun at all. When we had the 4 day outage 2 years ago my parents were housesitting for some friends in town for the winter, and I'd gone in to see them on Sunday, then spent the night and was planning on coming back here after work on Monday. Didn't happen - roads were blocked and the community up here was completely cut of from the outside world for about 3 days. By the time I got up here the power was back on and we had a lake in our kitchen (and working it's way to other parts of the house) from a broken pipe. It was another month before we could get the pipes fixed, then also had to have the kitchen floor replaced. Thank goodness for homeowners insurance - between the plumbing and the floor we had about $10,000 worth of damage, just from a power outage!

ETA: We really were lucky in the long run though. When you think of all the people who are homeless or live somewhere with no alternate form of heat, and maybe nowhere else to go (or no way to get there) it brings home how minor our problems really are. I'm pretty sure SusiQ and her husband will be fine, but I know there are a lot of people out there in really bad shape because of all this.

We pretty much barely have any disasters like that in Europe to begin with. And if something hits it doesn't do nearly as much damage as it does in the states. I know last year we had our first hurricane after 10 years. It blew the roof of 5 houses. That was it  When we lived in NC we had a 'normal' hurricane that did far worse damage. We are really lucky here.
