This weekend here is Mardi Gras. The past two days around noon, they have been having the children's parade. My daughter cried because the one yesterday was over. We've created a mardi gras monster. lol.

From the way I take it you have the big bang ending at New Orleans, but there are little "mardi gras" all over the state for about a month leading up to it.

Literally Mardi Gras is "Fat Tuesday" and it is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Everyone's last hurrah before settling down for the holy time.

It changes every year, some years earlier and some years later, it is linked with Easter and how it moves around. Just an interesting tidbit, do you know when Easter is? It is the first Sunday following the first full moon of spring. How crazy is that? I never knew that growing up, just knew sometimes it was in March and sometimes in April.

I would love to be in your area during this time of year just once chea! I didn't know they celebrated it before the actual week around the state. I know they celebrate more than just the day. ;) Enjoy :)

Oops, found a typo

I don't know a whole lot about it, to me Mardi Gras has always been drunk folks, beads, mask, and boobies. lol

I didn't know that it was celebrated like this either until I say the Mardi gras parking signs in the area that had today's date on them, I pulled up websites and it had different dates listed for different areas.

Given that this isn't the typical mardi gras. It's more family friendly.

Does anybody else live in an area that has their own version of Mardi Gras? Seattle has a pretty large celebration, referred to as Fat Tuesday rather than Mardi Gras. It's limited to a very small area, Pioneer Square, which is the oldest and most historical part of the city. For a long time it was pretty crazy, from what I understand very similar to what goes on in New Orleans, only on a much smaller scale. Then about 10 years ago a young man was beaten to death after coming to the assistance of a woman who was receiving some very unwanted attention. After that happened the police and the local businesses really pushed to change the tone of the celebration. There are now a lot more family friendly events, although it still turns into a somewhat wild (but way more controlled) party in the later part of the evening.

I know they have a celebration in an area of downtown, the Gaslamp Quarter. I've never been, but from what they show on the news, it seems like the party-goers act like they are in New Orleans with everything that entails ;)

Mobile AL has Mardis Gras very similar to New Orleans. Schools along the Gulf Coast dismiss for Mardis Gras, they have the kings and the clubs and museums (my aunt lives near Mobile). Last year my daughter had a cheerleading competition in Mobile a couple of weeks after Mardis Gras and you could still get beads out of the trees.

Sometime Memphis TN tries to get some Mardis Gras stuff going on Beale St. No big parades but parties and the do throw beads. One guy hit me in the head with some from a balcony.... rSCRD

I think the family friendly parades would be cool but I am way past the drunken boobie stage in my life.

It's not related to mardi gras but Memphis, tn, Beale st. forth of July is great ( IMO). I try to go every time we can. I love, love, love, it. It seems like Beale doesn't sleep for that whole time, esp. when it falls on a weekend. Did I mention I love it? and I have to eat at corky's. We have a corky's in Jackson, but the Memphis original is best!
