elliot smith-"bye"
mercury rev-"you're my queen"
mercury rev-"all is dream"
genesis-"the fountain of salmacis"*
daft punk-"nightvision"

*peter gabriel era

and this is a new one that i've been working on...

john frusciante-"a fall thru the ground"

sounds tight. yeah ive been rocking so much frusciante lately. i have this really really good song on my computer, but dont know what its called. its niandra ladesesque (as in, low-fi) and it has like these keyboards and guitars all layered and its really cool, but its not on niandra lades, its driving me crazy.

do you have a favorite cd of his? i've only heard niandra lades and shadows collide w/ppl (and i like niandra lades more). i'm sure ONE of his "6 cds in 6 months" releases should be at least worth getting, right?

oh and what cd is that pumpkins song ("glass and the ghost children") from?

yeah, ted told me about the cricket connection...

i think my fav frusciante cd is "to record only water for ten days". i want "niandra lades" again...the past two times i had it, i just couldnt get into it...but i think it would slowly grow on me...i definitely prefer his "junkie" days more than the too happy stuff...even though "smile from the streets you hold" was kind of messy, its winners (like the songs i put on that comp.) were intense..."i may know john again" seems like his cry for help from the bondage of heroin...i miss the shreaking, wailing, yelling john with crazy lyrics and awesome artwork..."niandra lades" has fantastic art, especially the cover and so i must get it...i didnt like "shadows" at all...it wasnt necessarily the production, i think just the songs in general...they sounded almost like leftovers for red hot chili peppers albums...of which i am not a fan...everytime i see the 6 months cds, they're always almost $20 and so i'll never get to hear them, due to corporate america and its trying to rape my wallet...

"glass and the ghost children" is from "machina: the machines of god" which is a great ep but a mediocre album...but "glass and the ghost children" makes up for it...i mainly like it when it changes in the middle and has a recording of corgan at his psychiatrist wondering if he's losing his mind...then this great second section of the song comes in thats really eery...a very cool song, indeed!

frusciante has a place close to the top of my favorite songs ever w/ his (non-)klassik "running away into you," the best track the guy ever did.
not keepin it lo-fi and fragile was the worst mistake he made, i think. Niandra lades is worth every song.

John Frusciante is really hit/miss with me. Like on "to record only water for ten days" there are some songs I really like IE Murderers, but it's like, a bunch of the other songs i cant stand or something, i dunno. It's like this with the other two or three albums i've heard of his too, kinda weird but then again i haven't heard ALL of his stuff so i gotta get around to that i guess. Like it seems like he is just sitting in his room with a 4 track and a drum machine (?) making stuff up and keeping it plus he is a totally burnt out mofo.

overall i prefer him with red hot chili peppers.

marth man, yeah, you put "runnin away into you" on one of the mixtapes you made for me. its def. a dope song. i love that cd.

yeah, waid, i agree that shadows seems like leftovers from a chilli's album, specifically, leftovers from By The Way (and he said he wrote it while they were making by the way). i really really like niandra lades, actually, i like the second half of it even more, "usually just a t-shirt". i def. agree that his early heroin days were the bomb. is to record water as low-fi as the early stuff?
that sounds like a good pumpkins song. i think thats the only cd of theirs that i dont have. i like siamese dream a whole bunch. gish is a grunge classic. its interesting that youre such a fan of such a mainstream band. is it because of their shoegaze influences?

"to record on water for ten days" isn't really lo-fi sounding (to me) but i think it's in the same spirit as his previous albums...musically it's just his vocals, guitar, keyboards and drum machine(S)...i think he made it right after he got out of rehab? i can kind of see some vague references to his "dark past"...the song "the first season" really gets to me, everytime i hear it...i wouldn't have even heard his stuff at all, if i hadn't caught the video for "going inside" from same album, on i believe mtv2? vincent gallo directed it and i thought it fit the song perfectly, with a car almost hitting him then reversing then doing it again, etc etc and john jumping and almost staying mid-air and jumping but never hitting the ground...basically, the album is like what "shadows" should have been...it's definitely rawer than that album...and i think the cover is pretty cool...

as far as gazer and the pumpkins and etc, i'd probably have to explain forever...i didnt even realize what "shoegazer" exactly was until i'd read a lot of interviews and reviews of the early stuff by the "christian" gazer bands...probably the first "gazer" album i ever even bought was "super deluxe" by morella's forest and i just knew i loved the really beautiful vocals over this absurdly distorted, yet melodic guitar...all i knew is i wanted to hear more music like this...i'd already liked the pumpkins and nirvana and a lot of alt rock stuff, but thanks to those absurd posters in christian stores that recommend "christian" bands as an alternative to your "evil" secular music, i discovered "secular" bands that opened up the rest of the world to me...my bloody valentine's name alone sounded incredible and since they were "supposed" to sound the same as starflyer 59, i bought the first copy of "loveless" that i could find, only to be confused by this massive musical hit of god-like power that is "loveless"...it took me a while to really get it, then i was hooked and spent years investigating the gazer revolution and spending tons of money on all those out of print, import only, usually great or so so albums of the "gazer" variety...i still think swervedriver are NOT gazer and are just an average britpop band...and pale saints are really not all that gazer, either...i've always thought the early flaming lips and mercury rev stuff was way better than my bloody valentine, and certainly more hazy and wall of sound..."siamese dream" is definitely a guitar masterpiece...the album is beyond perfect...everything: artwork, song titles, the SONGS...it's all bliss...so i dont know if i answered your question?!!! sorry!...i love the pumpkins a lot, and still think "adore" is very under-appreciated...its a fantastic album...also, thanks to the pumpkins i discovered some of their friends- like the frogs and catherine...so yes, i dip constantly into the mainstream of the 80's and 90's...its really my favorite period of music but also my life...culture has been dead ever since, to me...
