So I'll be 28 in 100 days. Each day from 7/19/2017 to 10/27/2017 (when I turn 28), I will post 5 songs (a soprano number, a mezzo/belter number, a tenor number, a baritone/bass number, and a duet), for a total of 5 songs from 100 musicals, or 500 songs. Each morning I will post the lyrics, then the analysis & notes later, followed by the music on soundcloud. Enjoy! Hope you like musical theater. I decided to post the thread here because it's more than music, it's more a discussion, because a lot of these songs come from my ideas of adaptations of movies, literature, etc. into musical theater. I am writing these songs in the meantime, to prepare them for future musical production, as I am a dramatist's guild member under the name "Alexander J. Valnad", which is my pen name. A member of the Dramatist's Guild is technically like a member of Actor's Equity for playwrights. They have a lot of legal rights, and are professional writers with one or more paying professional productions before a live audience (I've had six). The guild includes people like Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda, etc. But like you have a wide range of talent, from up there to starting writers. But they've all had some merit and honor in their field. So I'm proud to be a member. Anyway, about to make a post. |

Day 1 1. Soprano How Can I Tell Him, Edward Scissorhands, Kim When did the stars fall out of the sky, When the did the oceans run dry, When the sky grow dim, Was it, On the first day that I met him? But how can I tell him, All he did for me, all the sunny days, How I’ve loved him so, Why I’ve waited so long to know, Why did he say he denied me? How can he tell me, those are gone days, All I wish I could tell the man, How can I say I love the man. He took me into his arms, He fooled me with his charms. We lied there dreaming a fantasy And now I lay here and I see, Is the dream at last that seems like make-believe, In the middle of a cold winter’s eve. I can’t tell what he means to me, I can’t say to him all he did for me, If I could, I would let him go, But I’ve been waiting for the day to let him know I love him so. But I can’t tell him, I can’t ever let him know, I don’t know why that’s so. But one day, I’ll let him know. 2. Mezzo/Belter Birds to the Breeze, Garden Party, Laura There is a change starting in me, Who am I going to be, Hear my voice suddenly singing, Taking to the skies like a bird winging, I’m flying like birds to the breeze, I’m growing tall like the willow trees, I feel like loving somebody I see, Come, sweetheart, won’t you fly with me? Every day is a new day to explore But I still don’t know what am I for Maybe if I find somebody who sees What it’s like to be a bird to the breeze Blow yonder, winds, take me away, Gales from Heaven, hear what I say, Over the river and through the wood, Take me somewhere that I could, Fly, high, fly, high Fly, high, fly, high I will fly like birds to the breeze I will go over the mountains and seas ‘Til the day that I can see You beside me flying with me! 3. Tenor Dear World, Black Sheep (original), Sonny SONNY Dear world. I’m no more. You didn’t see me, now you do. Now you will kiss me on the head. Now you see me I’ll be dead. Dear world, goodbye. Dear world. I am through. Why do we live our earthly lives for? Will she miss me now that I’m gone? Too late, I am done. Don’t go, shedding a tear. If I so fall apart. Well you went and broke my heart. Where do you want me to start? Dear world. Now we’re done. How can I tell you how I feel? Don’t you know I loved you so much, But it seems we lost touch, Dear world, goodbye! 4. Baritone/Bass Something About Marie, The Stranger, Meursault The way she moves, The way she talks, The way she stares at me, There's something about Marie, What is it about Marie? The way she looks, The way she walks, The way she laughs at me, There's something about Marie, I sure do like Marie. One thing that makes me see, That Marie is meant for me, To hold, to feel, to touch, There is so very much, You can feel and still be a man, You are not a man, Until you meet Marie, What is it about Marie? The way she smokes, The way she jokes, The way she says to me, There's something about me. I know, It’s clear to see, Marie is meant for me, Then why isn’t clear what it is, That something about Marie— 5. Duet Madge, Picnic, Hal & Alan HAL Madge, I love you, For you are woman, And I am man, And that’s what cooking, Madge, Who’s it gonna be? (Instrumental) ALAN Madge, I love you, For you are beautiful, And that’s what wonderful, And I hope you choose me, Madge, Madge who’s it gonna be? (Instrumental) ALAN Madge would use her mind to think, HAL Madge would use her time to think, ALAN Madge knows I got the looks and charm, HAL But Madge knows I got a golden arm. ALAN Madge would use her eyes to think, HAL Madge would use her heart to see, ALAN Madge was with me first you know, HAL But Madge left you then, so go— ALAN/HAL Madge/Madge I love you/I love you/ I’m drawn/With passion/ And hooked/Burning/ You were a child/Since I first looked Look at those green eyes/Looked at those eyes Madge/Madge I think you’ll choose me/I think you’ll pick me Madge who’s it gonna be/Madge who’s it gonna be Madge!/Madge! |

1. Love Forsake Me, Man of the Year (original), Jeannie, soprano Love don't forsake me, Are you a love so true, Give me an answer do, Do you love me, Like I love you? Give me strength to speak, When I look in your eyes, Hearing your romantic sighs, Why do I feel weak, When I'm close to you? I hold you close and in my arms, I get to feel your manly charms, You take my breath away, But I start to go astray, When my breath is taken away, I think of the man that got away. Love forsake me, love forsake me, Go on and be lost now and gone, May this fling we call romance be done, And by Spring may my God come back to me, Oh, love please, Oh, love, please, Love forsake me. 2. Real, A.I., David, boy mezzzo What is this thing This thing called real Will someone tell me What’s the deal It seems that’s what Stands in my way At least that’s What they say If I could just be How the others be I would be real If I was made of steel And could crush those who feel I would be real If I don’t run When you say hey let’s have fun I would be real If I knew She was true Then I’d know I would be real And maybe then she’d want me And maybe then she’ll love me And maybe then she’ll hold me The way I dream she would If my eyes cried tears Or bled when cut by shears I would be real If you gave me chills And I then became ill If I died I would be real But I have this feeling This feeling called love And I have this dream this dream of Being wanted the way That I hope she’ll want me So doesn’t that make me real too? 3. Growing Old, War is a Picnic (original), Peter, tenor Now we are young, We have not sung, The bittersweet Song of life. One day we’ll find, What time does to the mind, Oh, how cruel it can be. And we will wish for these Youthful moments back, Two souls, youths wasting in the dark, Seems like all else is a walk in the park When you’re young and crying And feel like you’re dying And getting buried underneath the sand Just remember I’ll be there to hold your hand And we’re flying through the dark Through the dead of the night Gliding toward the light To the song of the lark, And I grow a little older, I grow a little wiser, Grow a little bolder, Grow a little stronger, Because I’m growing old with you, I’m growing old with you. And we will wish for these Youthful moments back, Two souls, youths wasting in the dark, Seems like all else is a walk in the park When you’re young and crying And feel like you’re dying And getting buried underneath the sand Just remember I’ll be there to hold your hand. No matter who I meet, in the dead of dark, Or wherever I hear the song of a lark, I know I’ll always be trying, To listen and understand, I’ll follow you across the land. I’m growing old with you, Old with you. 4. Bless our happy home, Topper, Wilkins, bass/baritone Bless our happy home, Now the play is done, And the love’s begun, For happy husband, happy wife. Though the heart may roam, It always finds ways, To make itself home, Every season, each precious day. Though a roving eye, May wander around There is nothing like a wife, Yes is this not simply the life? Here we are at home, There is nothing like this house, And it’s quiet as a mouse, So bless our happy home. 5. She Said Hello, I Miss You, Matthew D’Aubigne (original), Helen & Arnold, duet ARNOLD/HELEN She said hello,/Hello I stopped and life became clear,/Nothing to fear When she said hello,/Hello And suddenly,/It’s me There was nothing else to fear,/I’m here Knowing that she was near,/It’s clear I swore to love her always,/I’ve always And I’ll gladly love her always./Yes always Since the minute she walked in,/Been And said how do you do,/In love with you The instant that she came in,/I never win And said it was you,/Then you I knew it was meant to be,/Came to me You must believe me,/Suddenly When I felt something within,/Something within And every tear became a grin./Brought a grin And such little words,/How can I find the words Turned to such poetry,/I’m no good at poetry And notes to chords,/Putting them to chords Which became symphonies./Or into symphonies I said hello,/Hello I spoke to her and life started then,/Life’s been I said hello,/Mellow And suddenly,/You and me My wildest fantasy,/My fantasy There was nothing else to say when,/Came true, It has been I thank the Heavens for the moment when,/Bliss, ever since the moment when She said hello./You said hello Bonus: 1 Aria: Amo un altro (I love another) Italian: Parli, dici che mi ami Ridere, ma mi serve Finalmente ho bisogno di te con te Ma stasera non ti posso amare C'è un altro che amo Sì, amo un altro Quando la vedo lei, sono perso Ma quando la sento lei, mi trovo Non c'è nient'altro che lei Devo essere vero che non sei tu Tu non sei quello che amo Ma ammetto che ti amavo una volta Ora devo andare a trovarla E devo dirle Non cercare di fermarmi Lo rende più difficile Quando ami un altro Il tuo cuore batte per l'altro E per nessun altro Uomo o donna Su questa Terra Giuro che ero lì! English: Speak, you say you love me Laugh, but I need it Finally I need you with me But tonight I can not love you There is another one I love Yes, I love another one When I see her, I'm lost But when I hear her, I find myself There is nothing but her I must be true that you are not You are not what I love But I admit that I loved you once Now I have to go find her And I have to tell her Do not try to stop me It makes it harder When you love another one Your heart beats for each other And for no other Man or woman On this Earth I swear I was there! |

Here's the music to two of them. I made videos of them. Over the Horizon is from "Lewis and Clark: The Musical", but since it shares a title with Samsung's theme, and has lyrics of a "dreamer, hippie song, and is very anti-capitalist", it kind of loses meaning when it is associated with Lewis and Clark, and that era. So, I put TBA. I haven't decided who sings it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTT7oA8A9O8&t=67s Madge is from "Picnic", a play by William Inge, which was made into a 1955 film. Hal and Alan sing the duet, and images are taken from the film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DDxRQSh6ow About the name Alexander John Valnad on my youtube, "Alexander" was originally supposed to be my name, as chosen by my mother. My father wanted "Abdolazim", after his father, which became my middle name, which means "Son of Abdol", but I didn't like that name, it didn't fit me, and I'm too American for it. "Alex" is used in Persian and English-speaking countries, and is pretty much a universal name, and though common it is association with "power". Because I want my name to sound Anglican, I gave myself a Christian middle name, though I don't practice religion, and like the name "A.J. Valnad" for my pen name, or any of the alternates. "Jaan' in Farsi, means "dear", and sounds like my name "nah-dear", as it pronounced in English. "Valnad" is a combination of my last name and first name. "Val" from Valian, and "Nad" from "Nader", which would mean as pseudonym, "unique (nader), valiant one (valian)". So, yeah that's my pen name and user account on youtube. I wrote these on Finale. I plan to get someone to sing them soon. |
