1. Prologue (A single bed. ALEX is laying in it. Enter MEN IN WHITE, played by MARTIN and GRANT, and LANDLADY, played by ANNE.) MAN IN WHITE #1/MARTIN Good evening, sir, We're glad we came when we came... MAN IN WHITE #2/GRANT You needed us, We came to aid, Please tell us your name. ALEX What makes you think I'm in need of help? MAN IN WHITE #1/MARTIN Your mental state is a shell of its former self, MAN IN WHITE #2/GRANT Come take a breath of the outside world... MAN IN WHITE #1/MARTIN Time is ticking... MAN IN WHITE #2/GRANT Follow us... ALEX I shall not go with you... MAN IN WHITE #2/GRANT But you have no choice, You have orders. MAN IN WHITE #1/MARTIN We've been ordered to take you. Enter LANDLADY. LANDLADY/ANNE Take him away, He has nothing else to say, Take him away, Into the light of the day! (ALEX goes with them. Set of the hospital comes up.) ALEX What is this place, Is it a house for the insane? MAN IN WHITE #1/MARTIN Hush now, you won't feel anymore pain. (Enter DOCTOR, who steps away from piano) MAN IN WHITE #2/GRANT Good Doctor, he's in your hands now. DOCTOR/PIANIST A single dose of this, and you're out. Now it's time to la-la. ALEX falls. (Transition) ALEX Yesterday, I wanted you too much, Today, I wish we could go back again, Tomorrow, I hope we can have what we had, But I know, Yesterday becomes today, Today becomes tomorrow, Tomorrow becomes yesterday, And my dream of you, Will begin and end, And do you comprehend, That it's a game we play, And what more can I say, Time is a circle Once upon a dream, The world stirred, Like coffee to cream, The day began. And situations, Reality fixed, But those dreamers, That's what's life's meant. (The patients slowly process.) COMPANY Hello, Hello, Hello, The world is just beginning for you, It's not an end, It's a beginning, Just count up to ten, And start all over again. We've all had our demons, We've all had our dreams, But in life it seems, It's a long, long way... To the right track. So... Hello... Hello... Hello... Goodbye yesterday... Hello today… See you tomorrow… Time is a circle… DOCTOR/PIANIST This is Alex, he is just joining us... COMPANY Hello, Alex. DOCTOR/PIANIST Why don't we go around and share our stories? ALEX I'm Alex, and I'm wishing, Wishing for these youthful moments back, I need someone good, in this world, In this dear old, forsaken world, And I know they're there over the horizon. CLARA A guy like you, for a girl like me, A girl like Clara, can set me free, Because I can break your heart, I don't want anything, just to feel, That's a problem when you're not real. TEDDY You'll never find a bear like me, A guy named Teddy, don't you see, How can I tell you how I feel, How can I speak angel words to you, This Hell up here is Heaven with you. LUCY Lucy is a diamond in the sky, her eyes, Oh her eyes, and her hair change, sparkle, She's growing like birds to the breeze, She wants to climb mountains and trees, She is special, she is snow. ROSS If she would just say hello to me, somehow, I would tell her Ross, and I have words to say, I don't know her name, but who cares all the same, I really think she's good, and someday, If it's good for her she'll know. MARIE And I'm Marie and I'm burning bridges, I love you, I hate you, I want you, I need you, Wait I said that, I don't remember, but I remember, Seagulls, seagulls, seagulls, yes I remember, Seagulls, flapping, against the wind... JOHNNY And I'm Johnny, and I'm waiting for a girl, To show me through the cypress trees, where we walk, Can it be that a boy and a girl fall in love, And I know there's something about she thinks, Drinks, and there's something about me. DOCTOR/PIANIST Your turn... PAUL That's Luisa, she's a girl of few words, Picture in your mind, with a world in her brain, Who can't sing a single refrain, Because she chooses not to, Isn't that strange? I'm Paul, I left the ministry, Became totally deranged, From my family estranged, A lost shepherd from its flock, In the desert circled by a clock. MARIO I'm a beast, of terrible physique, My wife left me, I'm Mario, Because our marriage was troubled, A son she wanted, but what she wanted, I could not give her, but I need her. TANYA Look for her the beauty within, Your wishes are dear, What you need will come true, Hear what Tanya sings to you, Rest, rest, rest. JUDY I wished for her, she came true, She said Judy, come to me, That was our love story, For one summer morning, I won't feel her slip away. ANNE Don't you know the real star is me, Anne? I've been here before, many times, And now I'm here, one more time, Just for one more bow, I will take one more bow,. GRANT I never knew, I was the man of your dreams, Your dear Grant, And I'll stay and I'll stay, Until your heart I find. Maybe that's why I love you. MARTIN And how green was my valley, Your own Martin, Anne, come on and choose me, Until you choose me, I'll never know what life means! FIONA Love forsake me, give me an answer do, Do you love Fiona like I love you... Don't worry sonny, it will be okay, Chin up, chin up, everything will be Okay. ALEX Hmm. Everything will be okay. (Transition, Judy, Tanya, Martin, Grant function as back-up singers) I remember an event in time— When we all met— It was so long ago— But it was an inciting— An inciting event. I remember seeing a horizon— A line by the beach— A boundary— When I was young— Here’s to days sung— And time goes by— But I know you’re waiting somewhere— Somewhere— Somewhere we’ll be. And you’re still there, Waiting, Waiting for me. (Everyone fades into the darkness, with the exception of Luisa, who begins to paint, and ALEX who sings the number.) |

2. Over the Horizon (Alex by a painted beach. Two couples, MAN 1/JOHNNY, WOMAN 1/MARIE, MAN 2/ROSS, and MAN 2/CLARA walk by. They walk in opposite directions. LUCY dances in the shore as a seagull. She flaps her arms like a bird. LUISA sits in the sand behind ALEX, and paints the scene. After ALEX finishes singing, she reveals a painting of ALEX and the seagull, and the couples passing by the beach.) ALEX There’s a star waiting for me, Somewhere over the horizon, There’s a chance waiting for me, Somewhere over the horizon, And I know, Wherever I go That tomorrow I’ll be free, If I just can somehow be, Somewhere over the horizon. There’s a dream waiting for me, Somewhere over the horizon, There is love waiting for me, Somewhere over the horizon, And I know, Wherever I go, That tomorrow I will see, If I just can somehow be, Somewhere over the horizon. Over there, over there, Be someone great, over there, Not like who I am now. Over there, over there, Gonna find myself, over there, Gonna find who I am, somewhere. I know I’ll make it someday, Somehow, somewhere. There’s a start waiting for me, Somewhere over the horizon, There’s a road waiting for me, Somewhere over the horizon, And I know, Wherever I go, I’ll find something new, Gonna make it, Gonna make it, Wait and see, I can just somehow be, Somewhere over the horizon! 3. Intro/What’s Her Name (After LUISA reveals the painting, ALEX walks upstage. The scene is changed to an amusement park. A bench is placed. MARIO dresses as a clown. FIONA, MARIE, and ANNE dress as bathing beauties. ALEX looks out and sees CLARA on the bench, and JOHNNY and ROSS on the other side of the boardwalk. He sits at the bench where CLARA is reading.) Alex My memory of Ross— And Johnny— Is all the same. Who is to blame? Clara Say, what is your name? Alex My name is Alex, What’s yours? Clara Call me what you will, I’m just not real. Alex You’re clear as day, Your eyes blue, Your hair black, As night, That is real to me, You’re a somebody. Ross There’s somebody! Somebody there. Lately, I’ve been lonely, Lately, I’ve been thinking, Could a soul uplift me— Johnny, who is that— Johnny Ross, she’s just some girl— Ross I’ve seen her before— Was it yesterday— I see you today— I’ll see you tomorrow— All I know, She’s not just some girl, She’s the only girl for me, Johnny But she’s just some girl, She’s not worth it don’t you see, ROSS How can a girl matter so much, JOHNNY You hold and her and feel her touch, But do you know her name, ROSS Who cares man, all the same— What’s her name What’s your name I’ve forgotten if they’re green or blue Your eyes I mean What’s your name I’ve forgotten how much I love you. Though I’ve never been In love at all. ROSS & JOHNNY Every day I call it strange thinking of your face ALEX What’s your name I’ve forgotten if there was rain or sun The day that we met And who’s to blame— Clara... (Clara gets up. She walks towards Ross. She pauses and smiles. She waves.) 4. She Said Hello CLARA Hello. ROSS What do I say To a girl who speaks the world In one word? JOHNNY Just say hello— (Exit Alex) ROSS Hello! JOHNNY See you later. (JOHNNY exits.) CLARA Hello… Hello, friend… Ross/Clara She said hello,/Hello I stopped and life became clear,/Nothing to fear When she said hello,/Hello And suddenly,/It’s me There was nothing else to fear,/I’m here Knowing that she was near,/It’s clear I swore to love her always,/I’ve always And I’ll gladly love her always./Yes always Since the minute she walked in,/Been And said how do you do,/In love with you The instant that she came in,/I never win And said it was you,/Then you I knew it was meant to be,/Came to me You must believe me,/Suddenly When I felt something within,/Something within And every tear became a grin./Brought a grin And such little words,/How can I find the words Turned to such poetry,/I’m no good at poetry And notes to chords,/Putting them to chords Which became symphonies./Or into symphonies I said hello,/Hello I spoke to her and life started then,/Life’s been I said hello,/Mellow And suddenly,/You and me My wildest fantasy,/My fantasy There was nothing else to say when,/Came true, It has been I thank the Heavens for the moment when,/Bliss, ever since the moment when She said hello./You said hello 5. Kiss Me (He leans towards her. The sun glares on them. Eerie string music plays. Ross dips her.) ROSS/ Kiss me! CLARA/ No! No! ROSS/ Why won’t you kiss me?! CLARA/ I don’t love you! ROSS/ Love me! CLARA/ I don’t know you! ROSS/ Take me! CLARA/ I don’t want you! ROSS/ A girl like you needs a man like me/ CLARA/ Let go/ ROSS/ A girl like you needs to be kissed by me/ CLARA/ I won’t follow/ ROSS/ A girl like you needs to kiss my lips/ CLARA/ Get away from me/ ROSS/ A man like me needs to put my hands around your hips/ CLARA/ Hear what I say!/ ROSS/ Kiss me!/ CLARA/ Give me a reason- ROSS/ I love you! CLARA/ Why I should not- ARNOLD/ ROSS/ Let me feel— CLARA/ Hate you, I hate you! ROSS/ Why aren’t you real Like the other girls? (SAILOR/PAUL, enters with SAILOR GIRL #1/TANYA and SAILOR GIRL #2/JUDY. He waves, and whistles, and ROSS follows him. The scene darkens, a light on CLARA.) 6. Real CLARA What is this thing This thing called real Will someone tell me What’s the deal It seems that’s what Stands in my way At least that’s What they say If I could just be How the others be I would be real If my chest was steel And would crush men that feel I would be real If I don’t run When you say hey let’s have fun I would be real If I knew He was true Then I’d know I would be real And maybe then he’d want me And maybe then he’ll love me And maybe then he’ll hold me The way I dream he would If my eyes cried tears Or bled when cut by shears I would be real If you gave me chills And I then became ill If I died I would be real But I have this feeling This feeling called love And I have this dream this dream of Being wanted the way That I hope he’ll want me So doesn’t that make me real too? (Transition.) |
