Out of the Fire and Back in the Frying Pan

In Season 1, he was the braty little brother we all loved. The pouty one that was a walking encyclopedia of weirdness. He, for a few episodes, basked in his own pain, and later we found out ... guilt. Because he'd dreamed of Jessica's death days before it happened. He was a magnet for crazies (the Benders) and the supernatural loved to toss him against walls, and had a special affinity for his neck. And while Sam loved his family, he had tons of daddy issues that were played out in almost every episode where said daddy was mentioned. And he spent the season finale pinned to a wall. (and looking gloriously limp!) In Season 2, Sam's daddy issues seemed to have vanished, as when John died, besides one offhand comment in ELAC ... Sam seemed fine with the fact that the last words spoken with John were angry ones. And it was only again mentioned when it was revealed that John, as his last words, told Dean he might have to kill Sam. Sam, the one who all throughout S1 kept in contact with his college buddies ... seemed to alienate himself from everyone but Dean. He was growing distant with Bobby (or was that vice versa?) and the only ones he seemed to connect with were Dean, Ellen (though not her bitchy daughter!) Madison, and the PK's ... who, besides Ellen and Dean ... all die! Including Sam himself. Who is killed by then kills Jake. But again spends the season finale pinned (this time to a tree) then stands off in the sidelines while John gives Dean his unspoken blessing. And then came Season 3, the season where we were supposed to get some Sam insight. And while we got more Sam -- his interactions with Ruby, his finding out about Mary ... and who could forget him losing his shoe! It was also Dean's season to shine as the brother that was going to hell for his brother. And despite Sam's valiant efforts, despite killing the CRD and going after witches and demons ... (and Christmas Pagan Gods!) Dean still went to hell. All while Sam was once again pinned to a wall. And now we are 10 episodes into Season 4, and I have to wonder ... where is the amazing disappearing Sam? And the amazing disappearing plot line of a story of TWO brothers? One episode had 5 seconds of Sam, and I am sorry, if Dean fans had that, they would raise hell, literally! Interviewers are even asking about Sam, so it's NOT just Sam fans wondering. So if spotted, please return the adorakable geekboy little brother back to SN ... so we can get back to a show we used to love. Though I have a feeling it will be just in time ... to be pinned to something in the finale. |

You're totally right Tammi. Annj made an awesome 'Wanted' banner for Sam and I had it as my banner on a few forums for quite awhile at the beginning of Season 4. Being honest I've not been happy since Kripke gave Dean a massive role to play in the big demon arc because that's always been Sam's story - and Kripke did say that he liked the idea of watching Sam through Dean's eyes and that Dean was interesting because he was the big brother given the nightmare decision of either having to kill or save his kid brother. Now Dean is this big hero fighting on the side of all that is good whereas Sam's character is the one to have dark marks constantly put against it...Sam's got demon blood, Sam didn't save Dean from hell, Sam is the selfish one, Sam had sex with a demon... I feel like Kripke is constantly 'bad mouthing' Sam (for want of a better phrase) and Sam fans have a difficult task on their hands trying to defend the character because when is he going to be redemed! I love Sam but I miss him and I feel like I have no clue what is going on inside his head - which is another reason why I've barely written any SPN for awhile now...getting inside Sam's head is a guessing game and I can only live in hope that things will change when Season 4 returns. |

I'm Not Pathetic, Like You

I so agree with you two. I feel like Sam is really not treated right. Throughout all the other seasons Dean always stuck with him, telling everyone he would never turn. Now he suddenly believes that he will because Castiel told him so and so he has to get him back on the right path. Dean the hero and Sam the one on the path to hell. I love Dean the hero, but only if Sam is equally hero. I don't like the idea that Sam might go dark and Dean will fight against him. That's why I only right AU for season 4, like my story "The Light in the Darkness". I do love Dean, I feel that without him the show would be just as bad as it would be without Sam. The two of them belong together, but the important term is together here, not against each other. I can deal with some doubts and major conflicts, I even can deal with an episode like "In the Beginning" if it furthers the story, but I can't deal with Sam being put in the shadow and made second grade because he is the potential bad guy. One thing I have to say about this season though, Jared Padalecki really shines. He takes every oportunity he has to show us the emotions going on inside Sam. Not with words, because that's not in the script, but with his facial expressions and his eyes. Sam is torn up, fights with his emotions and against his 'dark side' and also with the emotional separation from Dean. He says so much more than I ever could express. To watch him is a joy because he has really grown so much since the start of the show. I hate when people put him down like in the end of 4.10 some people thought he should have been more emotional and maybe even cried when Dean cried and revealed what he went through in hell. To me he played it perfectly. Sure it is okay to cry to, but he needed to be the one to be there and be strong at that moment. He displayed his emotions perfectly on his face and otherwise he was strong because this way Dean could break down. That's how I see Sam anyway, he can be strong on the outside when it's time for it, no matter what he feels on the inside. There is an incredible strength in this boy. Anyone that thinks otherwise, needs to remember, that no kid as sensitive as Sam would have survived in a world filled with John Winchester, ghosts, demons and other evil. So now that I rambled on and on, I need to finally get off my soap box. Hope I didn't bore you too much. Hugs, Vonnie |

I've watched season 3's AVSC twice now and both times I was taken aback by all of Jared's facial expressions. I love Jared so much because he doesn't have a 'dead' actor's face, nor a big hammy wink-wink kind of humor to what he does. Yet he was so naturally funny, so naturally ON during that episode, in which I enjoyed Jensen's Dean too. I watched them BOTH. Jared was really adorable, and yet Sam was in so much pain for Dean during that episode, and perhaps for his own lost innocence, too. Is Sera Gamble the only staff writer who is aware that Jared is great with humor? I can see that Jared lacks confidence, or perhaps any desire for, one liners and snark, but he is genuinely funny on camera, and naturally so. And I loved how near-tears Sam had to be for most of season 3. He was so beautiful and subtle with his grief for Dean (or pre-grief/worry). I really won't forgive Kripke's treatment of Sam on this show. I suspect he wants to end it at five years so he won't have to pay higher actor fees or give them other rewards (being made producers, etc.). I can't believe he really has a five year plan, because he doesn't ever present anything on the show like it's been planned. The episode to episode links are so sloppy and choppy and anvilly. And Sam's sl lost its cohesion long ago. |

I think this is the biggest problem that I have ... that Kripke, in the 3 and a half years of his 5 years ... has unveiled ... nothing. I mean, in 3 1/2 years he has told us that the Mary knew the YED (we sort of guessed that in S1's Home, but it took 1 1/2 more years to actually come out and say it, and another year before it was revealed how.), that Sam was chosen because of timing and has demon blood, and that John was a pretty shitty father after Mary died. I mean, this is the most drawn out of any story I have EVER seen. All of that could have been told in one season, yet he takes 3 1/2, and still leaves us wondering ... Where's Sam? I mean, while this is a story is about their family, and what happened to them ... it is not the Dean show. And while I don't want the Sam show either -- I'd like the Brother show back, the one I fell in love with. |

Yeah, Brothers would be nice again. Two Leads, Two Brothers, Equal storylines. Although I would say Kripke owes more to Sam by this point. |

And yanno, what I don't get is, I would notice if they did this to Dean! I would say um ... where's Dean? Why can't some of the Dean fan's like Sam and notice? That is the most frustrating ... that some of them hate Sam and I just ... don't get it. |

I think Dean fans resent it when Sam is mentioned at all in the show! OMG! His mytharc resentment is still fierce, even though it's hardly done him any good. They see any complaints from Sam fans now through the eyes that Sam already had 3 years of story. Which is not true, if you look at how the seasons played out. Dean's Deal/Hell sl is the only one treated on the front burner, all season long, all seasons. Sam's sl is just in the background of the series, but that doesn't mean much if it gets no episode to episode prominent treatment. What the hell happended to Sam being on a mythic hero's journey? If he was meant to be Anakin all along, don't lie to me and say he's Luke and Dean is Han. Don't lie to me, for God's sake! |
