CW TCA 2014 News There's nothing official to announce just yet, but fret not, fans of "Arrow," "The Originals," "The Vampire Diaries" and "Supernatural": You're probably going to see more seasons of your favorite shows. At a session in front of reporters at the TCA winter press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz hinted very strongly that renewals are imminent for the network's most successful shows. In fact, "Supernatural" keeps doing so well in the ratings that Pedowitz is OK with making as many seasons as stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki want. Also looking good: "Reign," which Pedowitz says he's "bullish" on. "The numbers, which started off a little slowly, are increasing. I'm looking forward to it returning." He also notes that it's doing better in its post-"Vampire Diaries" timeslot than its predecessor, "Beauty and the Beast." Pedowitz uses the same word for potential "Arrow" spinoff "The Flash," which has morphed from a backdoor pilot episode of "Arrow" to its own solo outing. It changed, he says, because "rather than try to squeeze in a spinoff, [we thought] let's try to make it a bigger pilot, so if we do launch a new series, let's launch it with a bang like we did with 'Arrow.'" As for "The Carrie Diaries," Pedowitz says, "Amy Harris did a really good job with the show this year," but he hasn't decided on its fate. Same with "Hart of Dixie," which he says had a "hard time period" and will hopefully do better paired with "Whose Line Is It Anyway" in the spring. The final decisions for "Hart of Dixie," "The Carrie Diaries," "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Tomorrow People" will come in May. ========================= Our little Red-Headed Stepchild of show done good!

Press Release on last might's (Jan 21, 2014) ratings (Based on Prelims only - Final Ratings won't be available until sometime tomorrow due to Holiday Rating delays) Most watched ep since 2010 The CW's 'Supernatural' Has Its Most Watched Episode Since 2010 Written By Sara Bibel January 22nd, 2014 via press note: Last night's Supernatural was the series' most watched episode (2.7M) in more than three years (10/15/10). Week to week, Supernatural was up 22% in total viewers and up 10% in both W18-34 (1.1/3) and in A18-49 (1.1/3), and flat in A18-34 (0.9/3). Supernatural outrated original episodes of ABC's comedies in the 9pm hour in A18-34, and W18-34, and outrated Trophy Wife in the 9:30-10pm half hour in A18-49. At 8pm, an all-new episode of THE ORIGINALS rose 14% week to week in total viewers (2.35M) and rose 11% in A18-49 (1.0/3). One note that there were some preemptions for NCAA Basketball in 2.4% of the country last night, so these numbers could be adjusted slightly in the nationals. =============== My note: Before we "bust out the melted butter" check where the author says there were preemptions in several markets, none major, and apparently the TO/SPN were aired after the games and viewers should count. Also East Coast weather from the Mid-Atantic up to the Northeast was terrible, bitter cold and lots of snow so some CW affliates may have been airing weather coverage or had power outages. I didn't read anything about weather related preemptions though. Usually preemptions affect at least total viewers and maybe even demo. Some good news, however, on the "holding demo front", per my records dating back to Summer of S5, SPN has only adjusted down once, in early S6 due to preemption in Chicago, the #3 TV Market. So, crossing fingers that the 1.1 will hold.

SPN matches S9 premiere demo 'Supernatural' Matches Season Highs and is Most-Watched Since 2010 Written By Amanda Kondolojy January 29th, 2014 via press release: Last night's Supernatural was the series' most watched (2.79M) episode since 10/15/2010. It matched its season highs in A18-34 (1.1/3), A18-49 (1.2/3), and W18-34 (1.4/4), and had its best W18-49 since 5/13/10 (1.4/3). It was Supernatural's best rating among teens (1.6/6) since 2/5/09 and Matched its second best female teen rating ever on The CW (2.1/7, best since 3/15/17) THE ORIGINALS rose 8% week to week in W18-34 (1.3/4) and was flat in A18-34 (0.9/3). (Based on prelim ratings - TO had 2.25M viewers, 1.0 A18-49) ==================== Meh I'm not that impressed as 9.12 was an overall Meh episode. During S1 while SPN was still on Tuesdays, 1.13 (Route 666) also aired against the SotU speech on 1/31/2006 and it received the highest viewer total (demo not reported) of 2006 (and also to date) including the excellent S2 premiere. I thought Route 666 (first episode written by the Nepotism duo) sucked (The "Racist Truck"). While the demo of 1.2 may hold in the Finals (and TO may adjust up as it did last week) I won't be adding any rah rah emoticons. |

Finals 1-28-14 TO: 1.12 2.35M, 1.0 SPN: 9.12 2.76M, 1.2 Too bad SPN pulled the best ratings in demo and total viewers since 6.04 WAB for a meh episode although 912 did improve on re-watch (points that I'm saving for the discussion thread). ----------------------------- Finals Press Release This is a first for the show as far I can remember - two PRs in one day. This one acknowledges SPN as "counter - programming to the SotU speech: 'Supernatural' Scares Up Its Most-Watched Episode in Three and a Half Years Written By Amanda Kondolojy January 29th, 2014 via press release: Supernatural SCARES UP ITS MOST WATCHED EPISODE IN THREE AND A HALF YEARS January 29, 2014 (Burbank, CA) – Last night's Supernatural was the series' most watched episode (2.76 million) in three and a half years, since 10/15/2010, according to national Live plus Same Day Nielsen ratings for Tuesday, January 28, 2014. With Supernatural as counterprogramming to coverage of the State of the Union address elsewhere (9-10 p.m. ET), it matched its season highs in adults 18-34 (1.1/3), and adults 18-49 (1.2/3), and had its best rating among teens 12-17 since 2/5/09, and matched its third-highest rating ever on The CW among female teens (2.0/6). Week to week, Supernatural rose 22% in adults 18-34, 18% in women 18-34 (1.3/4), and 9% in adults 18-49. THE ORIGINALS was up 16% week to week in women 18-34 (1.4/4) and was steady week to week in adults 18-34 (0.9/3). For the night, The CW was up 11% week to week in adults 18-34 (1.0/3), up 27% in women 18-34 (1.4/4), and steady in adults 18-49 (1.1/3). --------------------------------- The primary aspect of these press releases that I don't want to downplay - all that SPN has had this year - is the show is still performing amazingly well! ETA #1: The CW ranks for this week (demo than viewers): 1) SPN 2.76M, 1.2 :); 2)Arrow 2.95M, 1.1; 3)TVD 2.42M,1.1; 4) TO 2.25M, 1.0; 5) TTP 1.72M, 0.7; 6) Reign 1.64M, 0.6; 7) HoD 1.16M, 0.4; 8) B&TB 0.82M, 0.3 ETA #2: DVR results from week through week ending Feb 2, 2014 (includes TO 1.12/SPN 9.12) Phooey. Every CW show but SPN (original demo = 1.2) made the chart this week. TO increased from 1.0 to 1.6, 60%, Arrow increased from 1.1 to 1.6, 45%, and TVD from 1.1 to 1.8, 64%. If SPN had increased from 1.2 to 1.6 (as it probably did or thereabouts) it would have not made this chart. |

Finals 2-04-14 TO: 1.13 2.10M, 0.9 SPN: 9.13 2.46M, 1.0 Not as good ratings as last week and the week before but both shows were up against all new, regular programming this week. The CW ranks for this week (demo than viewers): 1) Arrow 2.86M, 1.0; 2) SPN 2.46M, 1.0 – demo tie Arow/SPN; 3) TVD 2.16M, 0.9; 4) TO 2.10M, 0.9 – demo tie TVD/TO ; 5) Reign 1.64M, 0.6; 6) TTP 1.39M, 0.5; 7) HoD 1.21M, 0.4; 8) B&TB 0.93M, 0.4 - -> season high demo ETA #1: DVR results from week through week ending Feb 9, 2014 (inc TO 1.13/SPN 9.13) Low performer HoD, mid performer TTP and high performers Arrow (1.0 to 1.5, 50%), SPN (1.0 to 1.5, 50%) and TVD (0.9 to 1.6, 78%, against “first night” of Olympics, prior to opening ceremony). Surprisingly, TO, also 0.9, did not make the chart – it’s the first time this season that SPN made the top 25 and TO didn’t. To add a rare comment about "Ratings vs Perceived Episode 'Quality' (entirely subjective) if 9.13 The Purge was as reprehensible as some online fans are calling it, this would be reflected by not being on the chart, not gaining 50% in DVR viewing. |

SPN snagged another 1st place this week even with a major preemption. The CW ranks for this week (demo than viewers): 1) SPN 2.12M, 1.0 ; 2) Arrow 2.45M, 0.9; 3) TVD 2.03M, 0.9; 4) TO 1.83M, 0.8; 5) TTP 1.49M, 0.5; 6) Reign 1.32M, 0.5; 7) SC 1.14M, 0.3 B&TB was a rerun and HoD is on hiatus ETA #1: DVR results for the week ending 3/2/2014 – includes TO 1.14/SPN 9.14 Low rated series SC, mid rated series' TTP and Reign and high rated series' TO and TVD made the chart this week; high rated series SPN (originally 1.0 and the demo winner for ‘this’ week) and Arrow (0.9) did not make it. This chart ended on the high side this week (58.3%) so SPN would have to have an 0.6 (60% increase) to make this chart. |

Finals 3-4-14 TO: 1.15 1.80M, 0.8 SPN: 9.15 1.93M, 0.9 Ugggh! Both shows tied season/series lows in demo and viewers. Other network shows between 8-10 also hit lows (AOS/Glee/NCISLA for example) or tied season/series lows. So maybe it was not just 'CW Tuesday' – Daylight Savings Time doesn’t start until next week. Fortunately SPN squeaked out a second place finish to TVD in first place. CW Wednesday imploded this week with series lows for Arrow and TTP. The CW ranks for this week (demo than viewers): 1) TVD 2.19M,1.0; 2) SPN 1.93M, 0.9; 3) TO 1.80M, 0.8; 4) Arrow 2.21M,0.7; 5) Reign 1.75M, 0.7 --> demo tie with Arrow; 6) TTP 1.24M, 0.4; 7) SC 1.12M, 0.4; 8) B&TB 0.87M, 0.3 Over the next two weeks starts some CW scheduling adjustments: 3/10 - new SC & B&TB "Spring Finale; 3/11 new TO and SPN rerun (9.13); 3/12 - Arrow and TTP reruns; 3/13 - TVD rerun & new Reign; 3/17- new SC and new TTP; 3/18 new TO/SPN; 3/19 - new Arrow and The 100 series premiere; 3-20 new TVD/Reign; 3/21 New WLIIA/new HoD ETA: DVR results for the week ending 3/9/2014 – includes TO 1.15/SPN 9.15 B&TB, TO (0.8 to 1.4, 75%), SPN (0.9 to 1.5, 67%) Arrow (0.7 to 1.2, 71%), and TTP made this chart. Surprising no SC, TVD (originally 1.0) or Reign (orig. 0.7) “this” week. |

The 4 day period of 3-10 to 3-14-2014 was a mixed bag of new programming and reruns. Next week I’ll start reporting Fridays as there will be new programming including the hilarious “Who’s line is it anyway?” and the spring premiere of HoD. This week’s ranks will include new and reruns again by demo then viewers. This week’s ranks are: 1) NEW TO 1.73M, 0.8 --> Tuesday CW was preempted in Chicago #3 TV market 2) NEW Reign 1.48M, 0.5 --> Thursday CW had multiple smaller affiliate preemptions for basketball;3) SPN RERUN 9.13 1.05M, 0.5 ;4) Arrow RERUN 1.11M, 0.3; 5) NEW SC 0.99M, 0.3; 5) TVD RERUN 0.89M, 0.3; 7) NEW B&TB Spring Finale 0.80M, 0.2; 8) TTP RERUN 0.69M, 0.2 ETA: DVR results for week ending 3-16-14 (includes TO 1.16/no new SPN) There were limited new episodes airing this week. There was no new SPN/Arrow/TTP/TVD. B&TB, Reign and TO made this chart. Interestingly the "Live + 7 Day" data had TO at 0.9 rather than 0.8 per the TVBTN 'data'; a different rounding convention may used for reporting DVR results (example, maybe the L+SD data uses 3 decimal places and the "L+7" data uses 2 decimal places). This happened to the SPN S6 finale "L+7's" too - the L+SD demo was 0.8 but the "L+7" demo used was 0.9. |

Finals 3-18-14 TO: 1.17 1.53M, 0.7 --> new series low demo and viewers SPN: 9.16 1.86M, 0.9 --> adj up from 0.8 but new season low viewers TO hitting series low in viewers and demo (and IMO last night's episode was very good) and the demo and viewer bleed from SPN continues? SPN just squeaked out it's first S9 "up adjustment" from a season low of 0.8. SPN has rarely been affected by a post "DST" ratings decline.OK - just read comments on the "preliminary ratings" thread that The CW was preempted in Chicago and throughout Illinois but was not noted in the 'Ratings Caption' as 'TV by the Numbers' normally does, so Chicago is #3 and evidently there's smaller CW affiliates in region. The CW ranks for this week (demo than viewers): 1) TVD 2.28M, 1.1; 2) The 100 Premiere 2.73M, 0.9 3) SPN 1.86M, 0.9 - - > demo tie with The 100; 4) Arrow 2.42M, 0.8; 5) Reign 1.61M, 0.7 - -> demo tie with TO 6) TO 1.53M, 0.7; 7)TTP 1.17M, 0.4; 8) HoD 1.03M 0.3; 9) SC 1.00M, 0.3 ETA: DVR results for week ending 3-23-14 (includes TO 1.17/SPN 1.16 Low rated HoD, high rated Arrow (0.8 to 1.3, 63% ), TO (0.7 to 1.2, 71%) and SPN (0.9 to 1.4, 56%) made this ‘weeks’ that ended at 56%. Low rated SC and TTP did not, nor the series premiere of The 100 (orig 0.9), TVD (1.1) or Reign (0.7). |

Beauty & the Beast update Not returning until Monday, June 2 at 8 pm (thru 7-7-14) for remaining 6 episode S2. My guess is that The CW is not giving B&TB an S3 and the delay is to write a wrap up for the series. I have read that secondary markets like Netflix pay more for completed series rather than cancelled series (beyond the first season that is) that end on 'cliffhangers'. |
