Not that it would ever happen on this site I assure you, but down through the ages those boffins who claim to be experts in social morality have waved their collective censorship hand over anything even slightly controversial. Here are just a few examples of banned books from the last century; some are good for a giggle while others are still a little on the iffy side even today. ![]() Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Lewis Carroll Banned in China in 1931 as it depicted animals and humans on the same level. Brave New World Aldous Huxley Along with the poor and mediocre review it initially received, Huxley's book has become one of the most frequently banned books in literary history, yet triumphantly emerged as the one of today's greatest controversial classics. Different Seasons Stephen King Comprises of four novellas with an interlacing of horror that capture the dark corners of our times. It was once removed from school libraries because "it does not meet the standards of the community." Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury A benchmark dystopian novel by one of history's most prolific and influential science fiction writers. Gone With the Wind Margaret Mitchell Banned in the late '70s and early '80s for use of racially insensitive wording. (does kind of make one wonder what Mitchell would have made out of the backward slide version of the English language the African American uses today :ph43r: ) Lolita Vladimir Nabokov Banned for two years in Britain and France at the time of its initial publication. Nineteen Eighty Four George Orwell A dystopian classic that has been banned and challenged in many countries. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Banned in the former USSR for political reasons, with Solzhenitsyn himself also arrested and sent into exile. (now that's harsh ) )Slaughterhouse Five Kurt Vonnegut One of the most frequently banned books in American literature for its liberal, obscene language and sexual content. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Mark Twain Banned in US schools after parents claimed it was too full of racially charged language. |
