Schools' fear over 'gang culture'
A fifth of secondary schools believe gang culture is widespread among their pupils, while many more report teenagers carrying weapons and drugs, Ofsted has said.

About 40% of schools reported pupils bringing weapons into the playground or classroom at least once a term, the schools watchdog added.

In a new report on tackling disruptive behaviour, inspectors found about half of schools thought "gang behaviour" among feuding groups of pupils was a recurring issue, with 20% describing the problem as widespread.

Ofsted stressed that there was a lack of hard evidence to back up the perception of a widespread gang culture, but said drug abuse was "a daily challenge" for some older teenagers.

Chief inspector of schools David Bell highlighted the growing discipline problems facing English schools in his annual report last month.

Both Labour and the Tories have promised tough action to combat disruptive behaviour in schools ahead of the next General Election.

Inspectors visited 78 institutions to gather evidence for the latest report, including 15 secondary schools.

The report said: "In one in five of the secondary schools visited gang culture is perceived to be widespread, although few schools had firm evidence of it.

"There were instances of the carrying of knives and other potential weapons reported in less than half of the secondary schools and pupil referral units (where expelled pupils are taught) and in about half of the colleges visited."

The report said gang culture and weapon carrying varied considerably from one part of the country to the next.

Is Britain America ten years behind? I mean, we've been reading about this sort of thing in national newspapers in the US for a long time now. Hpw many times have we sat back and said "Bloody hell, I'm glad our schools aren't like that"

Should we be looking to implementing metal detectors and high profile security in our schools, as they do in the states?

We need to go back to old style discipline in schools, outside my nephews school yesterday the police were there holding a load of kids back, dunno what was going on but it must have been serious for the police to be there.

The problem is we've become too soft and kids know they can get away with anything. What saddens me is seeing the kids now strutting about with absolutely no idea how bad things are going to be for them when they have kids of their own. They might think they rule the streets now but just wait until they've settled down and it's thier cars that are being vandalised and their kids being stabbed in school.

I'm all for protecting kids but we've gone too far in the opposite direction, it's us who need protecting from the kids now!

I don't think there is any harm with metal detectors. It would be a deterent.

This would appear to be a huge statement, and I find it quite scary. Amy has 4 terms left at junior school before goiing up to secondary. I know I'll be asking lots of questions about this when I go to visit her new school.
If you stay ready, you won't need to get ready!

I don't think this is a particularly new phenomenon certainly not in the areas I grew up. In my school a lad got stabbed with a screqdriver, another lad beaten with a baseball bat and other chased down the road by a kid with a sawn off shotgun. Depending on the area this is life TBH. Drugs were rife when I was at school and still are. Yes I went to a inner city school but the problem is everywhere.

Gang culture is nothing new anyway, gangs are everywhere but proving their existence and potential to cause harm is difficult. I think a serious police presence is necessary nowadays particularly bobbies on the beat as well as enhanced powers in schools to expel persistent proven offendors (which as I already said is difficult enough).

As for us being America ten years ago? Well it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. lets just hope we learn from their experiences.
