Micro Scooters; Are they safe?

A couple of years ago, my daughter was playing with her friend in their garden. She had a go on this child's micro scooter. The scooter hit a cable which was trailing across the patio, and the scooter stopped dead in it's tracks. She went over the handle bars, fell, and broke her arm in 2 places. She wasn't going very fast.

My husband was working at a hospital in the Midlands, and there were 2 children in ITU from Micro Scooter accidents.

A colleague of his in Cambridge has a daughter who is 19. When she was 15, she also had a head injury from Micro Scooter accident. She had to learn to walk, talk, eat etc. all over again. SHe couldn't remember her mum, dad or anything that happened prior to the day she woke up in ITU.

4 years on, she walks with crutches, and can only remember the people she sees every day, so grandparents, aunts and uncles are quickly forgotten. :(

I am going to school next week to speak to the head teacher. I noticed that they are doing some work with the year 6's next year on cycle safety. I would like to see scooter safety for the whole school. The scooter craze is still rife here, with 30% of the kids travelling to school by scooter. They come hurtling down the hill so fast. One nearly knocked me off my feet today. I dread to think what would have happened. She'd have probably ended up in the road.

Do you have any experiences of Micro Scooters? What do you think? Should we be ensuring our kids wear helmets like they do on their bikes?

If you stay ready, you won't need to get ready!

I absolutely hate them... probably cause kids seem to aim at me and try and run me down lol

Yes i agree that schools should do more safety on them and that there should be laws about helmets etc..
